Afterhours - new Irish Whiskey son from SCF

This is probably the deepest set of heifers I have seen all year. They have a bunch of heifers that will run with the big dogs. They are real. If you have any hesitation about going an looking - get there and lay eyes on these girls - they are worth a trip. The guys there are very good to work...

Wash Rack Ideas - Good and Bad

Here is what we did and we love it. Two tie rails in the front - one high for bigger cattle, one low for smaller. I went to the local dairy supply company and bought scrap 2" milk line (stainless steel) that I cut into 6-8" lengths. I put those into the concrete 3' from the wall, and 3' apart...

Help.... Fair is next week and Steer is lame this AM

May be Footrot. We had a cow come up lame yesterday that started out of nowhere. Checked hoof, nothing. Had some swelling in back of the foot. I always thought footrot came from standing in water, or wet ground. Vet said it can come from stepping on a rock, or uneven ground, and bruising the...

Tips on building new wash rack

Haven't hada chance to build an arm for the hose - that is in the plans yet. I will second trhe exhaust fan - we have an 18" fan from a hog building set on a bathroom coundown timer. THe kids are instructed to set the fan for 30 minutes everytime they wash. Helps not only while washing but...

buckled knees on 2 month old calf

We have a Walks Alone bull calf the same way. He is buck kneed and toes out really bad. It's a structure issue. He is super thick, and hairy but can't walk.  We plan to get him grown up to whenever he can't walk then put him in the freezer. They will kill you at the salebarn, and there isn't...

Tips on building new wash rack

No doubt about the posts in the ground. You won't regret it. But make them removeable. we put 2" pipe in the concrete when we poured our concrete and made it flush with the top of the concrete, then took pipe that just fit inside tight to make the post. We then put PVC pipe with a cap over the...

    Exhaust Fan

I would like to know size as well. - I am in process of building a cooler - same exact size as a matter of fact - I put in a 8" bathroom exhaust fan on a cycle timer - not sure if it will be enough or not. The timer will allow me to have the fan cycle on/off for adjustable times.  - Just out of...

    Copper Penny

This is our Copper Penny Heifer. We bought her this fall. She is a April. She is a dirty white color (almost a smoke) with a white face, and white legs. She has awesome disposition, and my 10 year old really likes her. She was 2nd in class at the Badger Kickoff in a light weight commercial...

    Oster Volt Clippers??

Has anyone used, or own the New Oster Volt Cordless clippers? Look like they might be OK with the lithium Ion battery. 2 hours run time? My big concern is the slower blade speed of 2,400 spm    What's everyone's thoughts?

Add On Wheels for Grooming Chute

I have a 8ft Hybrid Sullivans grooming chute. I love the chute due to it's strength, and lightness compared to the all steel chute. The only problem I have is that when we go to a show, I am the one that get's stuck moving it into and out of the stall. This can sometimes be a ways away from...

When Should I start Winning Fill?

I agree with watching the quality of the Winning Fill - remember this is a semi wet silage type roduct with a limited shelf life. I am not sure it is designed as a complete feed - may want to continue to fed some grain mix to keep growth rate desired.

    Catching a steer

I agree with getting a buddy calf or two. Also, not sure how big of an area he is running, but possibly try to decrease the size to allow for closer contact. Spend time out there just being in sight of him. I found that just standing there watching them eat can sometimes start to calm a calf...

whos fed kent beef show blender?

We fed it the last 3 years. Worked good, but got expensive I felt. Cattle did OK - had good hair coat, but was never totally satisfied with rate of gain on the steers, or market heifers. We do not have a cooler, and in the heat of the summer when you are trying to get the steers to gain, I don't...

    Holstein as a Recip?

Yes - I am talking about using Dairy cows that would go back to the dairy herd for milk production to sell.

    Holstein as a Recip?

We have a 3  - 200 cow dairies within 4 miles. Therefore I could be somewhat selective on the cull cow I would use. I would also have access to virgin heifers as recips, which may be a better idea anyway. The cull cow idea came from a neighbor who uses a good cow with only 3 quarters as a nurse...

    Holstein as a Recip?

Been thinking - I know scary Has anyone ever used a Holstein cull cow as a recip? Here is my thoughts - we have a lot of holstein cull cows available in dairy country for not much money.I can you put embryos in holsteins, and then maybe try to raise 2-3 calves off of one cow (due to volume of...
