    First calf heifers?

Wean the calves. It will be way cheaper to feed a calf than to put condition of a heifer that is still lactating. Remove the calves and the heifers will gain weight on forage.

    Foster calf

I'll second Dyer's and Okotoks' comments. Compare the cost of running that cow without a calf on her versus buying a sale barn calf and bringing in who knows how many scour bugs or possibly Johnes.  I don't know where you're from or what your calving season is, but late July seems out of sync to...

    Lutylase question

I give 10 days after an accidental breeding and have good luck with that. Like the others said, you could wait a few days and maybe save $3 if she cycles anyway. On the flip side, I'd try to get it done by 30 days. I tried aborting a cow that was 3 months bred and saw no heat. Two weeks later I...

    Trouble getting herd bred

Could be a semen quality issue. Did you buy and use any new semen this year that might have been handled improperly? I've had differences bull by bull. Most 80% plus conception rates. Every once in a while I use a bull where I don't even get 50% settled. That semen generally came out of a...

    New Purchase...

I'm going to dissent from the majority and say go for the heifer calf. Especially if you've found one you like and she's priced right. You will save money up front. You can grow her out and control how much condition you let her put on. If you buy someone's old show heifer that got a fat as a...

    Recommedations Please...Electric Fence Chargers

Gallagher, hands down. I got tired of weak output, weeds grounding the fence, bulls walking through the wire without flinching. I put out the money for a Gallagher and found out how much my cheap Red Snappers were costing me in time and effort. The real value is in a high value fencer. There may...

    Breeding ?

There's often some blood a couple days after estrous. It has nothing to do with whether or not the cow settled. Take it as a sign that your heifer was in heat and your timing was good.

    aborting cow with lutalyse

Possum is right. 10 days works. Breed her on the resulting heat. 2 days is too soon. She needs time to develop a CL.

    Hardiest cattle breed

As far as longevity I'd say Limousin cows are one of the best kept secrets. The udders hold up and they hold flesh and calve well into their teens. Hardiness is pretty good too. My limi cows will out-forage the Angus which stay up in the lot looking for handouts.

    Help with hair coat

I've seen more slick haired Angus than Limousin. Shouldn't need to worry about the hair. If he has Limousin muscle you shouldn't need the hair to create the illusion of muscle.

    Heifer is just plain mean...

Send her to the feedlot and find another. Some things aren't worth the risk. I wouldn't even keep her as cow with a temperament like that. You must have other options for something to show. Even if another calf isn't as good, if it's more cooperative to work with, it will be more enjoyable for...

    Idea on Breeding Heifer

Personally, I wouldn't consider Eagle Eye calving ease with a 3.7 BW EPD. How about S A V Brilliance, a Bismark son at ABS? Solid performance and solid phenotype with a -1.0 BW EPD. His dam is pictured in the support photos. http://abs-bs.absglobal.com/beef/angus.asp?CodTouro=29AN1751

    CE & CEM EPDs

Putting that all together is what makes this business fun. It sure isn't slopping around in the mud during calving time.

    CE & CEM EPDs

I would say with the -1.6 MCE that you would want to take calving ease into special consideration when breeding his daughters. Doesn't mean you'll have to pull all the calves, but I would want to use proven calving ease bulls on them. I've set the bar high for MCE, but I'll have heifers drop 90+...

    CE & CEM EPDs

I ALWAYS look at these two numbers and I will not use a bull that is negative for either. The level of direct calving ease I want in the top 30% of the breed, and I want the maternal calving ease at least a positive number. In fact, I'll pass over some calving ease bulls if they carry a negative...

    CHAROLAIS clubby bull---VIDEO'S

I like the moderation, the rib, and the scrotal development. My concern would be that he is perhaps too straight in his shoulder and rear leg set.

    My official plug for I-80

Sounds like a premature. Was she bull exposed? I've never even had a twin weigh less than 50 lbs and that was pretty small.

    Looking for limousins

LimFlex cattle are 25-75% Limousin with the other percentage being Angus (red or black). LimFlex are supposed to be used on English breed cow herds to produce cattle with a lower percentage of Limousin genetics helping yield grades while not reducing quality grades. A half blood or 75% Limousin...

    F1 Simmi X Angus bulls

I agree with sjc, put whatever name you want on them, SimAngus, Limflex, Balancers, they're all crossbreds. I can't believe the dollars these things sell for. How accurate are the EPDs? You know the breed EPDs from both sides of the pedigree, but what happens in the crossing? Give me a purebred...
