    lice

Most pour-on products only control sucking lice effectively. One exception is Ivomec. Its expensive treatment if all your treating is lice. I would suggest two non-pour options to save the hide and clipper blade sharpness: Lindane, properly dilute in a spray bottle and apply consistently on...

    Questions about Oat Hay

Oats are higher in roughage than any other grain.  When my vet gets the call, 'the cows got into the granary', he always hopes it is the oat bin.  Also, rolled Oats and good hay are easier on the sensitive tummy for calf starter than sweet retail mix.

Steer Planet - New Website and App - Coming Soon!

I'm sure there used to be a drop down box from the home toolbar to go directly to the page preferred. ie: Forum>Big Show.  Currently we need to click through extra page to get there. Still miss the option to hover over a thread for brief information on topic. These are perhaps the same function.

Who are these two shorthorn bulls

Yes, they are photos of two different animals.  The second photo does however illustrate what the first bull would have looked like from a different vantage point. In real form he isn't nearly as extreme. The photographer is on the ground. That will narrow down the decade of your search!

    Cow Problem, need 2nd opinion

Agree with above posts.  I strongly suggest separating pregnant cows that act that way, from other cycling cows.  If she has a stillborn calf, you may have yourself to blame.

    need feed help

Divide the grain ration into 3 or 4 portions throughout the day, in the amount they clean up in 20 minutes. Ration the hay! Concider cutting down the beets. Incleases grain intake. Are you feeding anything to manage the inefficient organisms of the gut? Such as soda bicarb or rumensin. Parasite...

    Calving management and practices

Calving management & practices, in general:  1. Remember the calf develops about 75% in the eighth month of pregnancy.  At this point, feed intake/weight gain of the female greatly influences fetus size.  Thin cows need additional weight prior to this stage and fat cows/heifers should be on...

    Setting up recps and donor?

Your embryologist provides a schedule upon the initial visit to check the donor's reproductive health, confirm there is a good CL, and leaves the drugs needed and your homework.  This visit occurs about a week after the donor has been in heat; depending on work schedules.  If you have a...

    Below average Angus Bull?

Sharp looking herdbull.  Long, smooth and straight lines.  Nearly waste free below the elbow.  Age and birth weight not given.  I would concider his actual BW and dam's udder design and function before use.  To explain his fast development, an Igenity profile may reveal a low residual feed...

    Halter Breaking Headache

Positive reinforcement goes a long way in training calves, pups, kids.  Correcting bad behaviour upon the first sign also works best.  Cattle are habit forming creatures.  i.e. Cattle adopt routine for milking-time,  grain-time and come to the barnyard.  I have sent you PMs of on-farm...

Congratulations to the Agribition winners 2011

TXF PEGGY?!  Don't forget, I found her first, Feb. 1/10 in my barn. All dried off by momma Peggy, with hair straight up!  Ready to show. Cool from day one.  It is wonderful to read the comments of the real judges, the breeders.  Thank you .    Proves the show isn't over when the curtain...

    10 day old calf bloated

At 10 days, the condition is possibly caused by inadequate or inferior colostrum.  Mature cows produce higher quality colostrum than heifers.  Calf Immune system is inadequate and susceptible to all infections. The challenge is to keep the calf alive until it can produce its own antibodies at 6...

    Mud and Poop removal

All of the above suggestions help.  Eventually curry comb will irritate the skin and even quiet animals kick.  When your tired of wash and repeat, and you arms and wrists have had enough, put on safety glasses and use the blower. This helps loosen what is against the skin.  More soap and water...

    Which is best pic?

PHOTO #1  Is the best pose.  Eye and ear forward or its not worth the film, or in today's language, not worth a pixel.  Twenty years experience in doing this for others. If your really that green, or she is the nervous type, you did quite well.  One very good auctioneer claims  "Not all good...

    First time dealing with warts

reply to show heifer: It isn't warble.  Our DVM claim the warble fly is history.  This is  much smaller; the size of your small fingernail. Located on the animal's side. I anticipate the areas may become tender when the coat is worked.

    First time dealing with warts

Has anyone dealt with bump under or in cattle hide up to 1/3" dia.  I've expected this to break through skin as a wart, but hasn't (3 mos.+)  There are some smaller ones too.
