    Santa Gertrudis - The Real Deal

    The first picture is of the female I started my herd with. She is a 2003 model and was Grand Champion at the Houston Jr. Show in 2004 The second pic is of a bull I've posted a few times. I think we will have him collected at the end of the summer before he hits the show road hot and heavy...

    This is a Santa Gertrudis bull I own interest  and show rights in. He was show very successfully this show season  being named Reserve TX State Champion, 2nd in class at the National Show (he was 2 months younger than the class winner), and Bull Calf Champion at the Louisiana State Fair last...

    Ft.Worth Shorthorn Show

    I was less than impressed with his choice of attire either. Ft. Worth is one of the largest junior heifer shows in the country. Most judges really try to look nice.

    feeding show heifer in last weeks of pregnancy

    Depending on the female, I usually get away with feeding about 6 pounds a day of show feed and free range hay (we use Fitters Edge). Most show heifers will hold their condition very well during this part of their life...enjoy it. Heavy bred heifers are usually cheaper to feed than about anything...

    ~~~~Thoughts On Hereford Cow~~~~
    Cows should be judged on the quality of their progeny. Phenotypically, she looks like a quality female. Love her front end...should be a good breeding piece.
    Ft Worth heifer judge
    She does not pic cattle like her family raises (if that makes sense). Her family is big in the Hereford industry but she doesnt follow the stereoptypical hereford pattern (moderate, broody, etc). From my experience, she puts special emphasis on breed character. Sometimes she'll nail you on nit...
    How long should cows go without hay between feedings?
    We try to speard our bales apart to encourage the cattle to forage. I have Gerts so they will eat just dang near anything and are great foragers. We definitely make them clean each bale up and sometimes they may go w/out for just a little while during busy times. I think everyone has the same...
    The craziest thing you have seen at a cattle show
    About 5 years ago, my FFA chapter had all of our calves tied to one side of a short set of tie out panels at San Antonio with a girl from another chapter's Brahman heifer tied to the other side (these are the "portable" tie outs with 2 panels and an alley in between..like what Houston has)...
    Opinions on santa gertrudis heifer UPDATED PICS
    IT SURE IS......coming from a bloodline where both her dam and sire are packed FULL of maternal power she should raise a good sized and functional calf. Her dam was an unbelievable milker, this calf weighs 650 at 5 months old which is way more than ive heard some of these clubby cows...
