Are there dairy steers at your county or state fair?

At my local fair we have classes for them during the steer show like any other breed. We also have a Champion/Reserve dairy steer. The grand dairy steer steer gets to compete in the grand drive as well. I live in Indiana.

    Extreme Heat

For us in Indiana, we've gotten a much needed rain the last few days. We've gotten about 3/5 of an inch. (1/2and then 1/10). Therefore, it has been cooler and my steer is eating pretty well and has kept most of his hair. Wondering if anyone else has had luck without a cool room?

Steer stopped eating....fair in 2 weeks

Yep I gave him his second dose of 20 cc a few minutes ago. His first was yesterday. He ate about 5-6 pounds of feed this morning and 4-5 flakes of hay. Probably going to feed him 7-8 pounds tonight, walk him some and see if he cleans it tomorrow. I'm planning on giving him the probios for 2 more...

Steer stopped eating....fair in 2 weeks

Thanks I've also been walking him more throughout the day. I gave him about 4 to 5 pounds of feed and he's almost got that cleaned up. Hoping to go out there soon and if he hasn't eaten it all put more baking soda on it. Then at noon if it's finished I'll give him more hay, about evening give...

Steer stopped eating....fair in 2 weeks

Ya I'm not sure why he lost weight. I could tell by the sunkeness and shallowness. But I've fed some baking soda today and he ate half of the pan. When he wasn't finishing it I took it away and gave 4 to 5 flakes of alfalfa/grass hay and he consumed it immediately. I then bought some probiotic...

Steer stopped eating....fair in 2 weeks

Thanks RackRanch. Would you advise to maybe give him the probiotics next week if he isn't getting better at the end of this week? Maybe I can talk my dad into getting some winning fill next week as well? I just went out to the barn and he has eaten half of his pan of food from this morning...

What is the probiotics called.. what does it look like and can I get it at Rural King or the feed store? This morning I gave him some salt to make him drink and I put baking soda over his grain. He had eaten some of the grain before the baking soda and is now eating more after putting the baking...

    Cool Room

I've been talking to my dad about getting a cooler...but he sees it as "winning at all costs." I've worked my butt off this summer with my steer and luckily he's kept his hair but hasn't grown any. We have a 12x12 stall that we would only put one calf in. We have a guy who would sell us the AC...

twistedshowstock- Thanks for the advice! The county fair is more important to me than any jack pot show. Therefore, I should be more concerned on how the steer will grow and put on weight towards the end when it really counts, and not pushing him for an open show. I need to keep an open mind at...

The steers above were better in that yes they did have better hair, more finished, a more defined quarter, thicker from behind, more dropped in the flank, more compact and shorter bodied from the side profile, walked with more style, bred from a newer bull, more depth of body, and thicker over...

Competitive in my county fair as in the hunt for Grand Champion with the fair not being overly competitive in cattle. (Grand Champion may place in the middle of a state fair class). and for open shows yes the middle and up would be my goal. this year I was placing in the bottom half of the class.

    Show Calf Prices

I'm just looking for a calf that would be pretty competitive at my county fair and at some local open shows. Not really looking for calves that are in the hunt for state fair.... but I would like to show my calf at state fair sometime.
