    Show Calf Prices

Yes I guess that I will just have to look around and see what's out there for the right price.I've got 4 or 5 places I'm planning on visiting the first of October. If you know of anyone that sells for reasonable prices in the central Indiana area let me know!!

    Show Calf Prices

TalCool1-Thanks soooo much for the advice... it really helps! I will post a pic of my steer this evening and see what opinions you have on him. My friend has already taunted me about the other shorthorn steer that supposedly is good even though I saw him at the weigh-in, in February and he...

    Show Calf Prices

Not saying I constantly worry about price. Just saying that I couldn't understand why people market calves $10,000 to $20,000. It makes more sense knowing what goes in to "creating" the calf.

    Show Calf Prices

Doc- thanks! It makes a lot more sense...now I can know somewhat if the seller is being fair on his price or ripping me off!

    Show Calf Prices

Just had a few questions on show calf prices. Would the prices go down because of all the farmers having trouble breaking even with the drought this year? Why do producers charge so much for "state quality" calves. Not saying the calf isn't worth $20,000, but isn't that a large price for...

    How dry is it?

Looks to be the same here in Indiana. Can't load any pics but our corn is starting to tassel and there are hardly any ears on it. Most of the crops are done around here. Thought we were going to get rain last night suring thunder and lightning, but not a single drop :(

    Beating the Heat

Ok thanks, people have always told me to leave wet under fans but I guess I had better change that! :)

    Beating the Heat

How many times do you blow dry a day? I've just been rinsing and brushing hair forward... then sticking him under the fans. Hope your is eating well! I've been lucky in that mine has been eating a lot! Btw how much are you feeding your steers? My fair is at the end of July and he is starting to...

    Beating the Heat

Right now in Indiana it's above 100 degrees and I was wanting to know what you all do to keep your calves cool and keep as much hair as possible. I'm rinsing three times a day, morning, noon, and night. I turn the mister on from 12 to about 5 with two power fans in the barn. I go out in between...

    Something Different

At our fair we have a calf round up in the grandstands every year. There are 4 feeder calves that all come from the same local farm. 12 kids are then pulled out of a hat. Those 12 compete to catch one of these 400 lb to 500 lb steer calves. They have to put a halter on the calf and lead him into...

    2012 Fair picks

Mark Tenenbaum- haha ya that happens at our fair. But the kids I see in there are the ones that end up winning so it all evens out. Sometimes I don't even know who's showing a particular calf until they walk into the ring with it. I can't stand not being with my steer in the barn :) Glad that...

    2012 Fair picks

Same when you look around in the barn where the cattle are at for the fair and there are no kids to be found... until the day of the show.

    Walks Alone vs BIM

I'm breeding my sim/angus non clubby cow this evenning to either WA or BIM. This would be her 4th calf. As a heifer her first calf was enormous and we could not get it out in time... her second calf came backwards with one leg sticking out. However, it was a small pull. Her 3rd calf came...

    Semen came today!

Well I have the heaat detection pads so I will put them on the heifer and then on one cow. The other cow i'm AI actually was in standing heat when I went out to do the chores. She was being ridden and she just stood there and kind of hunched her back a little. I let my AI tech know and he is...
