    Bull to heifer Ratio

I've heard a few old timers say that when you get a lot of heifer calves, it means you're in for a wet spring. The theory is that those heifers will help you to rebuild with all that grass you have. Last year we had 70% heifers, but we had the worst drought we've had in 20 years. Then I started...

    bc,ad,dc, and print media

As far as the Gelbvieh, the breed association technically owns the magazine. I believe the Canadian Association has their magazine setup seperately from the association though. The Gelbvieh World is technically it's own entity and is held accountable financially by itself, but I believe they...

    Bull to heifer Ratio

10 heifers and 5 bulls. At this ratio, it could make for an interesting bull sale next spring!

    new camera update

That's kind of where I was leading the discussion to. Unless you're printing incredibly large images, I don't think you'll see the need for a 10 MP camera. The camera companies need a way to justify releasing a new model and getting more money out of us though.

    Birth weight question

Have any of you ever used the heart girth measurement? There have been studies showing that if you measure around the heart girth you can compare to a chart and come pretty close to the birth weight.

    new camera update

When you get into livestock photography, how much of a difference does the mega pixel setting of a camera really make? For instance, if I'm looking at a D40 vs a D60, one is a 6.1mp and the other is a 10.2. At this point, is the mp difference enough to compensate the price difference?

    ear tags

That's exactly the problem we've been having. I had been using purple tags with white marker, but the white keeps flaking or fading. I moved to teh Richey tags that are engravable with a dremel tool. Now we're red and white and the color shouldn't flake off anymoe.

    ear tags

At our place all of my cattle have red tags with white writing. My dad's cattle have orange tags with black. We actually have to be very careful on the color tags we use because of all the black cattle in the country. Each of the neighbors has a designated color that they've used for years, so...

    Rescue may be needed

What breed is that heifer? I know quite a few people up in that area and might be able to help you out.

What are your indulgences? Besides cattle!

Not sure what you boys call a dutch oven, but up here it has a completely different meaning!

    Will Alias Throw Horns?

Nope, I meant if one was polled and one was horned. If it was the exact same bull otherwise - same performance, same EPD's, same pedigree, etc.

    Will Alias Throw Horns?

In our part of the country, if you try to run a pen of commercial steers through the sales ring, you will get docked if they have horns on them. DOesn't matter if they're attached to the skull or not. I always thought this was stupid since you don't eat the horns, but our buyers will find any...

    DOW 7350 non-cattle

I actually reallocated all of my 401K on Friday. I had been on track as a moderate conservative investor. I said the hell with it and looked at it in perspective - I'm 28, and with what I have in my 401K right now, I spend more than that in a month on livestock feed. I figured "what the heck...
