    Shorthorn AI Certificates

Would someone explain to me why it takes so long to get an AI cert. I asked for some in November and  one took over a month. I realized I forgot to order one on another calf and have been waiting over 3 weeks on this one. I have always ordered from the semen supplier (Cattle Visions in both...

    Any Capiche Calves?

I had  two heifers this spring; both pretty thick and grew well. When you look at the group of heifers, they stand out.

    signs

I remember seeing posts here or somewhere regarding companies that would take a picture of your cows and make a sign. I tried search but didn't locate anything. Can anyone help me?

    Ripped ear

The bull calf that would probably be my best steer prospect this year has a "broken ear". Can't blame anything other than operator error. When I was tagging him shortly after birth he was jumping and his mother was excited. He jumped and I tagged him right through the cartlage rib. Now he my...

    Capiche

I had three Capiche calves this year; the largest was 83 pounds. The 83 pound calf's dam  was out of a bull that I got rid of because I'd pulled too many calves.

    Old Sayings

An old farmer  once told me " when I was young I pissed under the fence to keep from hitting my nose; now I piss over the fence to keep from hitting my toes!

    Tagging Cattle

I do the year and then sequence (917 17th calf of 2009). I also tag bulls in right ear and heifers in left which comes in handy if looking straight at calf or from a distance.

    Shorthorn Directors ?

I would just like to have a director or officer that would answer an email; I've probably sent at least 10 emails (some to all directors) over the last few years and have got ONE response.

how do you weigh your calves?

For those of you who use a sling with a fulcrum bar; how do you manage to carry all that and still catch the calf? I have enough problem carrying a bucket  with the scale, sling, ear tag, needle and Bo-Se in one hand and the calf catcher in the other. I'm ok putting the sling on and lifting up...

    free martins

Has anyone used the blood test from Genetic visions to determine whether heifer is free martin or not? I had twin with pretty good genetics this year so decided it was worth $25 to try the test. Test came back saying NOT a freemartin. I'm keeping and will attempt to breed in spring so we will...

N/C What's everyone think of the Leach @ Texas Tech situation?

There have been two comments on here referring to a "shed" and "electric closet". If you saw the news report with the attorney you will see that one of these was the media room at the stadium and the other was a large garage used to store equipment. they were not a shed or a closet!

    electrice fence problem

I apparently have a short in an electric fence but can't find it. I've walked the fence a couple of times looking for all the usual problems but still not fixed. I see testers advertised that point to the short. they are expensive but if they work, it would be worth it. Does anyone have any...

    electric prod

I've always resisted using an electric prod when working cattle in the chute. Now the vet is agreeing with my partner and saying it's better than twisting tails and poking. I have a calm herd and want to keep it that way. Your thoughts??
