    Big Calves ?

You would think Dr. Who is calving ease and he has been advertised that way but i know of some that have been 120 lb range.  Any time we use these club calf bulls there is a chance for problems.  and the weight isnt the issue it is how they are shaped.  And who made who is in the pedigree.  I...

    Big Calves ?

I would challenge that also but did you ever notice that in a feed yard of fat heifers.  If one has a calf they are always a little thing.  You would think with 20 lbs of corn a day you would get a huge calf.

    King Meyer

Good point CJC.  I would never breed a who made who to close together.  You will get monkey mouths and cripples on both ends.  And sun seekers can be a little unsound to start with.

    Big Calves ?

Well i had three today ranging from 80 to the last one i estimate at 120 when i picked him up.    Rodman heifer at 80 lbs estimate cant weigh that one cow would bury you in the spot.  Then gold member at 90 lbs had to pull upside down.  Second one of these in two years.  Then just two hours ago...

    Big Calves ?

Those are not that large for being heat waves and heat wave sons.  I will not  breed a cow to heat wave or his sons till their fourth calf because of the birth weight issue.  And more importantly is not the weight but how they are shaped. Had a monopoly heifer at 90 lbs out of a big witch dr x...

    Calf joint problems

over the last 20 years i have seen alot of calves buck over a little when they are first born.  Like they said above the tendons just need to stretch out.    Most come out of it in a week or so.  Most of the ones i have seen have always been really good show cattle.  Really thick with alot of...

Breeding Maine heifers for club calves

All i can tell you is that i calved alot of witch dr. out of first calf simi angus heifers and they were 85 to90 lbs on the heifers and bull calfs were 90 plus.  The weight wasnt so bad but they were thick and thus had to assist them.    And i used to help calf out about 30 to 50 heifers a year...

Breeding Maine heifers for club calves

Half of those bulls you just listed i would not breed to first calf heifers.  Anchor is definetely a no.  Witch Dr you can put you will have to pull half of them.  Jazz is not a heifer bull either.  And i have heard bad things about grizzly on heifers.

What works on Heat Wave Daughters?

I have seen heat waves for mothers and 99% dont milk or have about half the  milk their mothers did.  Even my full flush cows do not milk  neither as much as their mothers either. As far as birth weight goes on those heat wave daughters.  I have seen one calf be small then the next one huge out...

    Blood in calves stool

Get some corid and put it down the calves throat for three days in a row.  If i remember it is like 5 cc.  Will clear it up.

    Overdue cow

I had the vet check one a couple years ago that was over due a week.  After checking her she calved the next day but had to pull it.  It was 120 lb calf but was an easy pull.  Cow weighs about 2000 and has never had a calf under 90 lbs even as a heifer. Vet told me that when you palpate the cow...

What works on Heat Wave Daughters?

When you buy cows off a dispersal sale you have no idea how the cow milked or if she calved easy.  I dont understand and am scratching my head at breeding a heat wave daughter to a heat wave son carnac.  Might get a great freak or a complete dud.  Also if the cow wasnt tested or sold as TH...

What works on Heat Wave Daughters?

Pelvic measure is great but what i have seen on some heifers i measured years ago they had enough room but they had some birthweight in their pedigree so still made for some pulling of calves. Also it was the shape of the calves.  That big hip and shoulders dont come out very easy no matter what...

    Frozen Ears Question

If part of the ear is hard as a rock and cold you can try to warm them up but i have done it by holding ears in your hands but they still will loose a little bit of the ear.  I have heard of people using nylons on the ears and taping them against their neck.  Problem is the cow licks the calf...

    Walks Alone's first calves!

Walks alone is not a double bred full flush.  He is a heat wave out of a f ull flush draft pick cow.  The calf that apparently just died was a walks alone out of a full flush cow making that baby a double bred full flush. Ty websters calf is not and can not be a walks alone calf.  First calves...

    Calf's back legs

Did you try to pull the calf backwards? I have seen alot of backwards calfs and they are always a little funny on the back legs the first couple of days from the pressure of pulling on the back legs.  But i have never seen one buck all the way forwards.  Did he get hurt some how?

what is the longest time you have waited on a cow to calve?

Years ago when full throttle was the bull of choice for those sought after steers.  I can remember 14 days was no big deal to wait on and they were always big bull calves that needed assistance or c sections.  We did try to induce some but sometimes the cows cervix didnt dialate properly and...

    Walks Alone's first calves!

Double bred full flush may not help on that birthweight. But with his breeding and width  i would say  have to use him on a smooth shouldered cow.  And with his breeding with f ull flush, draft pick and heat wave all are known to have birth weight issues.

    No colostrum

Talking to my vet over the years and from my expeirence i like that calf to get the colostrum in them within two hours max.  Of course i check cows every four hours or more if one is in labor or showing signs. Most are up sucking within 15 to 30 mins unless it is a hard pull or c section then i...
