    Big Calves

Biggest I have personally seen was a 155lb Heatwave bull out of a Witchdoctor calf.  Actually wound up with a high seller out of that deal.  I had him pegged as a cripple due to the size.  Had a 145 lb Heatwave out of of a huge Dictator cow born unassisted.  Never seen one that big that didn't...

    Too Small Framed?

I worked at a salebarn that sold 110-120k head of cattle every year.  When a set of cattle would come into the sorting alley, any clubby looking calf was usually sorted off with the the bad eyed, the southern looking, and the off colored cattle.  The buyers don't want them.  For them these...

Heifer calfed but never bagged down yet

just because a calf doesn't get colostrum doesn't mean it will die.  does it put it behind the eight ball and make it more vulnerable to sickness. yes. will it die. sometimes. not everytime...  in my experience, the ones that calve and don't show much bag don't seem like they ever will milk that...

Thats the calf.  Best one I've ever seen still in the pasture on his momma.

Ward Eckloffs high selling steer was out of a Money Talks cow and Heatwave.  That calf was a stud.

    Strange Cattle Deaths

My dad went to brand a yearling colt with an electric iron and somehow wound up electricuting the colt and killed it.  Vet was standing right there when it happened.  They were going to cut him after branding.  Vet thought only thing he could think of was faulty branding iron.  Needless to say...

    Too old to Castrate?

When the calves are older, (400LBS. and up) banding would be my advise.  It is not as hard on the calves and they stay on feed better.  Just less stress for a larger calf to go through, escpecially if they are getting fed alot, they won't spend a couple of days laying around being sore. However...

    Strange Cattle Deaths

With some people posting on steerplanets problems they are having with cattle I was wondering what was the strangest way you have ever lost an animal.  To start off, I had one cow in a pasture of 120 head, a thunderstorm rolls through with a ton of lightning.  Guess who's cow got struck.  Should...

What spring calving matings are you looking forward to?

Heatwave X Dr. Who/Simmy (Had eight calves this year out of her first flush, sold every one) Heatwave X WMW (Big, Stout, Athletic looking cow.  Hope heatwave will do the rest on her) Heatwave X Foreplay/Topper (A Foreplay daughter out of one the more impressive donors I've seen.  Unproven flush...

    Congrats Ne. And Idaho

Its too bad neither Enderle or Woodhead was good enough to play at Nebraska when Callahan was here. Gotta love that.  Woodhead is getting pretty good pt for the Jets (how did Marlon Lucky fare this year in the NFL?) Oh well, if Lee can quit staring at his feet when he is running and play more...

    clubbie bred cows

Agree with the others.  WMW cows seem to be the best thing going right now.  Also like Dr. Who's.  Nothing wrong with a real nice Full Flush cow either.  Anybody doing much with Foreplay cows out there?  Some of the better donors I have seen have been Foreplays.

    Heatwave Heifers for sale

I have two heifers for sale.  My steers were all sold.  They are Heatwaves x Dr. Who/Simmy.  Weighing an  estimated 650-675. One is a black and the other is shorthorn.  They are out of the same flush.  Located in the Sandhills of Nebraska.  These heifers will compete.  If interested call...

what to flush this cow to?

Didn't see the emphasis on breeding for females when I first posted.  I would agree with WMW or maybe Doctor Who.

what to flush this cow to?

Heatwave.  You can sell an average heatwave just as easy as a real good one out of some of these other bulls. Can't believe more people don't use heatwave or the clones more.  Proof is in the pudding.

    Steer Bull

Don't know anything about Orange Crush. I do have some experience with SB daughters.  I would say as a whole they will be average to poor milkers.  Did calve out several SB granddaughters a couple years ago.  They were better, but not great.  I do like the looks of these cattle though. Sound...

Cow dog needed -- criteria follows.

My dad has had a few dogs from Zach Tobias in Sargent, Ne. Been really good dogs.  Best dog he ever had (from Tobias)got  killed by his coyote hounds.  Was in the same boat as you.  Has a good one now that came from Tobias.  Been kicked in the head by horses a few too many times (chipped teeth...

    AI School

Not sure where you are located.  I went to an ABS school in Kearney, Ne. Jon Herrick (sp?) was our instructor.  We had about 18 people and probably 35-40 cows.  Thought class was really good.  I know Jon puts on schools in NE and Kansas.  Not sure where else.  I would recommend him and his...
