    Soundness of bulls

Soundness is so overlooked in the show ring that people forget most cattle need to walk for nourishment and soundness is necessary for longevity. Hoof size is something people seem to have forget about unfortunately. As long as poor skeletal structure and poor walking is being traded for puff...

    Less well known Shorthorn herds

You should make a trip to the great white north. There are so many great herds who are relatively “unknown” other than “oh yeah I have seen that prefix”. But most go unrecognized because they aren’t in the show ring. I could name off herds from Alberta to Ontario worth a very strong look for...

    Best shorthorn cow families?

I firmly believe in keeping the cow lines within their names. You can notice traits from each line even considering the different sires used. They may not be considered the best Shorthorn cow families but we have some long running lines at the farm with Clipper, Betsy, Daisy, Goldie, Florence...

Looking for old Shorthorn bull pics

What would you say Red Max Prince was frame score wise Grant? Was I undershooting at my guess of 4.5? Russ

Looking for old Shorthorn bull pics

It would be nice if there was someone standing in the photo of Red Max Prince to gauge his size/frame. I would take a guess that he would be 4.5 ish and not any where close to hunting geese with a rake like the other two. Russ

    Muridale Raw Hide 6 E

He stood out when I saw the bulls. He’s thick , well structured and has a great head . I didn’t get to fully analyze each one but he definitely caught my eye. Russ

    Question for Canadians

We use mainly Canarm as parts and elements are readily available. When they are out of the wind and have enough cattle drinking they don’t freeze up too often other than the float. It was -40 to -45 celcius over a week period a little while back here in Manitoba and only had frozen floats. Russ

Proof the show ring is still screwing things up.

I think you nailed that one Oakview. Just look at the trendy new terms you hear pop up when they want to invent a new reason! Russ

3 generations Bull to Grandsire progeny- Shorthorn

I’m pretty far behind the ball on this update but here’s how the pair looked at their final show of the year at Agribition. The yesterday heifer calf sold at the National sale auction in Brandon at AG-EX to Hedley Livestock and I still wish she could have stayed on the farm. I also included an...

Where have all the readers/posters gone?

I agree with you E6, I come here mainly for the Shorthorn history, stories, bulls from the past that are relatable and interesting new *functional* cattle. I rarely post but have certainly found like-minded people on here. The turn off’s are every 10th post someone having “ the best most awesome...

    Birth weight epds and such

I agree with you Shortybreeder, we had a whoopsie a couple summers ago and my Diamond Cutter bull ( performance bull with 101lb bw) bred a heifer. When it came time for her to calve  we put her in the barn and figured we would give her a half hour. Went out 20 minutes later to check and she was...

    This Year's Show Bull

You definitely have a good chunk of bull with Sandman. I’ve had the opportunity to see him in person and I know if I was running angus I would be settling some cows to him. Plus it’s good to see more people showing their breeding bulls instead of breeding show bulls.👍🏾 Russ

3 generations Bull to Grandsire progeny- Shorthorn

We certainly aren’t disappointed, her 70lb heifer calf is coming along quite well in my opinion and will be coming out to a few shows this fall with her mother and will be our consignment to the AG-EX Shorthorn sale in Brandon. Here she is pictured at 6 months.

    JT President 5B (Kaper 4508)

Titan was bred and raised by my dad who holds the JT prefix. On a side note we have ( in my opinion) a pretty good 2 year old Florence heifer out of Titan who has a Yesterday calf on her. The pair will most likely be coming on the show road this fall. Russ

I think lining him up through the pedigree would be pretty good. Are you double stacking with another bull in there as well? Who do you plan to inject for your future “ inline outcross vigour” on the stacked 4508?

    JT President 5B (Kaper 4508)

Thanks Gary, the amount of daughters we have keep makes it tricky to sort breeding pastures for the yearling females but imo that’s a good problem to have.

No he has never been export drawn. Being in Manitoba the closest export qualifying stud is 10+ hours away!
