Our New Herd Bull COmments / Constructive Criticism

Nice bull from the photo.  He reminds me of Crimson Tide, one of my all time favorite bulls.  I would like to see a video of him before making final judgement.

Charolais bull... Your thoughts and opinions please

That's a nicely built, clean fronted bull.  I like him!

    AI'ing Heifers

I think heifers are easier than cows to get settled since they are usually in good body condition but they can be harder to breed from a technical standpoint since their cervix is so small.  Otherwise, I time my breeding same as cows and get good results and I sometimes bred them while still...

    Newborn calf back legs...

It would help if you could post a photo but your calf seems very similar to a Monopoly heifer calf I had three years ago.  She never got better and was docked when I sold her at the sale barn.  I posted photos on SP and several folks who saw the photos thought she had some kind of genetic...

    Income tax write offs

Your setup sounds more like a hobby that an business.  You may be able write off the improvements to your faclities but if you are audited by the IRS you will have to prove that you are operating your facilities as a business.  If you can't do that then you will be hit with a tax bill and...

    Keepin him from looking "sheathy"

It is genetics.  In Texas, if they have enough "sheath" often they are shown in the American Breeds classes.  I know some folks who put those castration bands around the the flabby part of the sheath to make it fall off and look smoother.

what is working well with walks alone cows and monopoly cows

I have had had excellent luck with Crimson Tide on my Walks Alone females.  These females are out of simmental cows and a bit larger than most Walks Alones.  Also, Troubadour works but will add some frame and the semen is hard to get.  I bred some WA's to Smokin Joe and will have calves in...

    looking for a creep feed

I use a blend called stocker 10 that is 10 percent protein, 3 percent fat, 30 percent fiber plus bovatec.  I am feeding it free choice with no issues.  Price yesterday was $232/ton.

To induce or not to induce.....

OH Breeder is right on with excellent, experience based advice.  Other than being a full term fetus, I want to see colustrum in the bag.  Just strip a few drops from the udder and you can easily tell the difference between colostrum and milk.  The colostrum is thickier than the milk and a...

To induce or not to induce.....

If you are not sure when she was bred, I would be careful inducing but an 85 lb calf is big enough to come out.  Just make sure the cow has colostrum.  I have had good luck  inducing but usually only induce heifers.

    Club sires for disposition

I have only had a few Unstoppables but they have been extra gentle, as have my Monopoly calves.  Walks is a different story--all over the place disposition wise.  Have one now that is puppy gentle but have had a few that weren't so gentle with most somewhere in between.

    Club sires for disposition

I will second what you say about MAB.  They may vary in quality but all the ones I have had have excellent dispositions and tons of hair.

    livestock trailers

I'm not sure where you are located but Brad Davis in Iowa handles new and used trailers, mainly aluminum. If he can't find what you looking for it probably doesn't exist. I know he delivers to Texas and points on the way. Really nice guy and sells steers and, no, he is not my brother-in-law...

    crimson tide

He has worked pretty good for me on some clubby X Simmental influenced cows.  Here are a couple of steers that I have raised out of CT.  The first one is out of a Walks Alone X Emblazon X Simmental cow.  The second one (paint) is out of a first calf monopoly X Simmental heifer.

    crimson tide

Don't know.  I bought some a couple of days before it went up.  I read a couple of years ago that CT was dead. Perhaps the semen inventory is getting low.  Also, he recently had a high seller 60K plus.  It has been selling on Launters online auction for 31-36.

    twins question

Yes, the odds are only 10 percent that your heifer is not a freemartin.  To know for sure, there is a genetic test offered by Igenity that can determine whether or not she is a freemartin.  You send them some tail hair and $45 and they will run the test.  http://www.igenity.com/

    Steer not eating Bermuda

If it is good quality Bermuda grass hay that is palitable, he will eat as much of the hay as he needs.  If the was rained on in the windrow or is stemy and poor quality, then he will eat less of it and you should find a better quality hay.
