    Your cattle's favorite food??

New Yucca pods in the spring.  It always amazes me how they can so delicately pluck the pod right off those spiney stems.

What color patterns are your Durham Reds?

I'm curious as to what color patterns you all are getting on your Durham Reds.  Ours have mostly been "skunks", dark red with white bellies & sometimes little roan patches on the tail & head.

What breed of cattle do you raise?

Love those reds!  We've raised Red Angus for 23 years and my family had reds before then.  We traded a bull for 2 reg SH heifers last year & have really enjoyed playing with them (they do stick out in the herd).  Now we're toying with Durham Reds to see what we get.  BUT we just enjoy cattle in...

    Lets start cutting more bulls!

Oh, beautifully said!  Thanks to our dearly departed RAA Exec Sec, the same thing has happened to us.  Thankfully we have long-time buyers who never fell for the PhD preachings and appreciate our breeding program.  The few years we jumped on the EPD band wagon were a disaster -- we quickly went...

    Where are you from

Podunk New Mexico -- good ol Portales, close enough to wave at Texas but nowhere close to anything!  But we love it, small town morals & a great place to raise kids & grandkids.  PS..this has been a great topic.

    Too much calf.

Thiamine (vitamin B1) does help nervous animals.  It can be purchased over the counter as a gel syringe manuf by ORALX.  It is labeled for horses but does work on cattle.

Gosh, there are some really good bulls on this post.  I'll jump in with our latest herd sire--he's just one of the plain ol red angus we raise!

121# Heatwave calf w/ swollen tongue

OFS - our old vet told us that years & years (we're old!) ago when we had it happen with a calf.  Thank's for asking.

121# Heatwave calf w/ swollen tongue

OK, laugh all you want -- it works!  A difficult birth can cause swelling of the calf's tongue.  Rub sugar (yep, plain ole table sugar) on the tongue.  Don't have a scientific explanation -- it just reduces the swelling!

Slaughter House Abuse From Agriculture's Best Friend, HSUS

Yes, it is an industry problem..but I believe GREED is the major motivator in these types of cases.  Like Chambero, we never ever haul off an animal that is unable to move under its own power.  We accept the loss & put it down ourselves in a quick painless manner even tho it hurts our hearts...

    my new calf

    anyone shoot sporting clays?

Hi Frostback.  Grab your shotgun and go for it.  My husband and I spent many, many years shooting trap -- he also shot skeet but I couldn't get the timing down on it.  I actually got started out of self defense -- he was always at the gun club & I got tired of just watching...  I'm not a hunter...

Buying Bull through the Auction Mart

We have all our bulls sold as breeders semen tested -- it's the best insurance you can buy.  Our cull bulls are either steered and fed out for beef sales or hauled to the packer.  Your reputation as a breeder is the most important commodity you can protect, and nothing travels faster or farther...

Our thoughts & prayers go out to Red.  We're too new to know her but have gained a lot of respect for her opinions.  God bless her.

Red Angus - Looking for a new executive secretary

Hey GaryBob, we only bred 5 cows to SH bulls (we're not big on jumping into the unknown big time).  We used Kaboom, Salute and Radioactive.  The Salute & Radioactive calves were 125 & 140 - thank goodness we used mature cows.  We chose these bulls in our first attempt to produce show steers for...
