Argentine Cattle Breeders June 2016 US Tour

With the 1st cutting of hay in the stack, I have finally had a little time to look around on SP and noticed this topic. It was a pleasure to meet these Veterinarians from Argentina. Communication wasn't too easy, but "Dimo" spoke pretty fluent English, even though to my later embarrassment, I...

    11 out of 13

AMEN! And...this phenomenon is sure not exclusive to the Shorthorn Breed.

    Calving in the Rockies

It's not always this pretty in early March, but thought I'd share this picture from yesterday. I think it got up to 60 degrees! Sorry for the big photos, but don't know how to resize them. I'm lucky to even get them posted! We will have some short videos of the yearling heifers available on...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Thanks Ryan and Josh. I've copied and pasted a note from Wayne at the Center from last year, when I asked for details on the ration. Please see below. I've got the Lab reports also. If you'd like to see that, please email and I will send a copy. "Mr Larson The bulls were fed a hay based, high...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Well, the bulls are home from the U of Idaho bull test. 15 of their steer mates are at the Tri-County Feed Test yard at Oakland, IA and their heifer mates are still being home schooled in the art of becoming low maintenance cows like their dams and older sisters. The heifer calves have never had...

Old Shorthorn Genetics still in use

They look good John! Post a picture of the June born 14C calf when you get a chance. He has an interesting pedigree also.

Josh, if you call just to pick my brain, it will be a short conversation.

Shorthorn Impact 2015 - My thoughts

Quote:  "I tried to enter my data the other day. I'm not sure I did it right but we shall see. I do have a question on the 205 day status quo for attaining WW. There are folks out there who state leaving the calf on the cow for 10 months, resources are adequate mind you. Each year will vary but...

Man must measure by Jan Bonsma

Mill Iron A- A more reasonably priced book by Bonsma is the "Wortham Lectures in Animal Science". It seems to have the most pertinent stuff from Man Must Measure and can be found at a much more reasonable price. I found a real nice one from abebooks.com Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

    news from 1920

Thanks for posting these links. I love the old historic stuff. Not sure about who Marshall was except for seeing the name in some old pedigrees, but the article on breeding for type of Shorthorns from 1920 is still relevant!

Shorthorn Impact 2015 - My thoughts

I sure wish that I had been able to attend the Impact 2015 meeting. From what I read here as well as speaking with attendees, it seems to have left a very positive impression on people. I hope to be able to attend in the future. It sounds like the main “take away” was the need for more...

Shorthorn Impact 2015 - My thoughts

I second this TGIB. I also like the Larry Leonhardt quote that Josh uses for his posts "The unmeasured qualities that make cow-calf production easier and reduce human stress are actually more than a convenience, they are essential to producer profitability".

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Josh, I don't have much actual carcass data as we've always sold the steers after weaning. I dug through some files and found a couple of sheets from the kids' 4-H Steers of Merit. I would imagine that the criteria for SOM's are pretty much the same across the country. Montana uses the...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Yes, Librarian. Several of the heifers are by YY105U. Without seeing the tags though, it's hard to pick them out. I agree that good cattle can be found in the "carrier" population.
