Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Thanks 3 Eagles! Hope you can make it down to the Valley of your Ancestors to stop in for a visit.

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Technically, it's still fall so I thought I'd share a link to a video of the heifer mates of the bulls at the first of this post. We've really warmed up here the past few days after having about 10 days of 0 to +15 degrees. We had a little snow, but the heavy rain last night pretty well took...

    IMF CCL6th progeny

Oakview, I would've liked to known also. The center will not share information between breeds/breeders. I think that's a good thing. I hauled the heifers about 15 miles last year to one of the participating Angus guys place to make it more convenient for the ultra sound tech. This Angus guy and...

    IMF CCL6th progeny

Librarian, Due to the high steer prices last year, I only kept 6 bull calves. For the most part, they were selected for the maternal qualities of their dams such as high fertility, soundness and udder quality with sufficient milk. They were also solid red, as that is what I am able to market...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Thanks Gary. I’m pretty sure you agree that once a breeders’ desired type of Bovine is developed, line-breeding should be a tool used to firmly “fix” these desirable traits in place for genetic predictability. When these strains are crossed with other predictable “genetically fixed” lines, the...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

As long as I've had to relearn how to post pictures, I thought I'd share another one I found in the file. I really get a kick out of this little cow. She's an "Easy" daughter and her dam  is out of Diamond Baroness 21J. The old Baroness cow was purchased as a calf by a breeder in Washington...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

We got back from the NILE last night. We didn't place real high in the Commercial Heifer Pen show, but we did meet a lot of nice folks and had a great time! We did have a lot of favorable comments and quite a lot of interest for function oriented cattle. Sorry for the late reply GM, but this is...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Thanks for the comments! We select for cattle from "the ground up", placing more emphasis on structural soundness, udder quality, and function than we do for  performance. 5 of the calves in the video are from Coalpit Creek Leader 6th and 7 are from a home raised bull (YY105U) that saw...

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

I haven't had a chance to look at SP at all this summer. Fall is a great time of year for me as the pace slows a bit! I was able to take the video camera out yesterday and capture the bull calves on pasture. We haven't had any rain to speak of this summer. The irrigation pumps (and the...

Thanks for this link Librarian! Sure a lot more articles containing (still) pertinent information than what arrives in the monthly mail these days!

Who does reliable ultra sound pregging in SE/S Central IA/N. MO

We started using the Biopryn testing 3-4 years ago. It's extremely accurate and inexpensive compared to most methods. The drawback might be if you need sex determination at the same time. There are affiliates all across the country. http://www.biotracking.com/?q=labs

    Low input Heifers

The mountains were sure pretty this morning with their new (for the second time) dusting of snow, so I took my camera along when I took salt and mineral up to the cow pasture. The cows had a pretty good scatter on them but I thought this group was in the best scenery. This is a closer-up...

    Low input Heifers

Thanks Duncraggan, 270A is the heifer in the center of the last picture. Like the vast majority of others pictured, she comes from a long line of good, sound, solid females top and bottom, so I suspect she will turn out the same. We have to lutylyse a few every fall, as some breed as young as 7...

    Low input Heifers

(clapping) I'll bet they'd look just like what you'd have were you to put a half brother of these heifers on your good Red Angus cows!

    Low input Heifers

On my way home yesterday afternoon I stopped by the heifer pasture to check on the replacements and took a few pictures. They were feeling pretty sassy, but finally settled down enough to stop playing. The heifer calves have been weaned about 4 weeks now and are over their stress. The coming 2's...

    Weaning time

Mark, If by "semen bull" you mean Coalpit Creek Leader 6th, the heifer is one of his daughters. His daughters are making really good cows. I'm going to have to separate the bull calves from the heifer pairs earlier next year, as some of the little buggers are able to impregnate their 1/2...

    Weaning time

Thanks Gargan, The heifer was a bit fidgety in wanting to get back to her mates. We don't supplement our heifers. They do run on decent hay-ground pasture like she is on after weaning, but they will winter on hay and mineral just like the cows.

    Weaning time

Later on the same day, I took another video of one of the heifers we weaned 2 weeks ago in preparation for our NILE trip to Billings next week. This is a Coalpit Creek Leader 6th daughter out of a first calf heifer. DOB 1/19/14, actual BW 76 lbs, unassisted/unobserved. Again, don't have your...

    Weaning time

We weaned over the weekend. It was a beautiful day. Watching the cattle come up through the coulee to the corral was picturesque, so I thought I would share.  I took this video with my phone, so it's not the best. You may want to turn your speakers down, as it was pretty noisy...

    Coalpit Creek Leader Bulls

They look good Tamarack! I clicked on the picture of the blue roan and it took me to photobucket. Did you also take the pictures of the grizzly and wolf tracks? From one picture, your blue roan looks like quite an animal.
