    Just let him sniff it and talk to him and show him it isn't scary. After he lets you rub his belly, he'll see its not to bad. When you to set his feet up, most times i have them tied up because you never know what they will do, but most times they'll either kick at the stick, so use an older one...

    what to look for in a shorthorn show steer?

    This summer i had a shorthorn steer, according to a judge he had an 'excessive frame'. I have found its hard to get a nice height on  a shorthorn, i've seen fat and short, and tall and lean, its hard to get a good one,but when you do get a good one, ten to one, they'll do well at fairs.     If you haven't started with the showstick i would show it to him and let him sniff it and stuff, show him it isn't scary. Then just touch his side with it and slowly work down to his belly. This is what i have been doing for the last few years and none of mine have any problems with the show stick
