I showed for about three years in the old pav. It was about 300 head when I first started showing. Oh the good ol days of generators and no space to set up a chute!!!

Ideas for cattle tag numbering system

Richland, I was curious because a friend of mine does the same as you. He runs into the same problem from time to time. I run only 25 cows so keeping track of cow families is pretty simple. I use the same method as a lot of people, this year stared with 201 then 202.....  I also invested in...

    Doctor Meyer

734 is a Michigan area code by the way knabe. I have never used him but I have used his two brothers. In my opinion Mamas Boy is the better of those two by far. I used mamas boy on higher percentage simmy cows and got along great.

    Cattle for sale?

Not to hijack the post but I am also looking for some decent breds up here in MI. I've had a hard time finding good cows that aren't bred to their brother. Most around here are fence row cattle that ain't worth a chit.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

Thank you vcsf, I had never seen galant or black max pics before, they were before my time. I could very well see why so many people liked Galant and Bold Future. Used on the right cows a breeder could really get some outcross genetics for today's world. On a seperate note, from what I recall...

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

I forgot the best one!  What would Black Max half bloods do for improving size, yet keeping eye appeal?  When I started showing in the early 90s they were some dang good cattle, I could never afford them then. Does anybody have a picture of that bull?

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

By no means do I think that every old bull will work. Papillon, Deffinatly not! What about 600U, I think he is an 86 model. Bold future that was mentioned earlier would have his place in today's crossbreeding. What about Highwayman, a doubletime son?  I would guess that most non diluters could work.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

I will do my best, no grantees. The one in the abs book is his 1983 Denver pic. I would bet they have a shorter backdrop now. 63 inch hip height with a 52 inch flank height.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

Sue, Generation III was owned by Dave Stough and Singletree Farms. He was born in 1980. I referred back to my 1989 ABS sire directory, Singletree was a very prominent breeder of those flowered giants back then. Kingpin was also mostly owned by Michigan breeders.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

I would bet that some of the Shorthorn breeders would have a staw or two in the tank to help out the cause.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

I'm not saying we need to go back to the " All legs no gut era", but more pounds per head slaughtered does look like it could come into play. Just a thought.

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

Here is one of my random thoughts:  With the cow herd numbers at 50+ year lows, and the present dry conditions across the true cattle country, could there be a place again in the industry for the " Big and Tall" ?  Crossed with today's marbling abilities and nutrition know how?  Could it be the...

    Sick Cow? Please Help

I worked for a small dairy when I was just out of high school. What you are describing sounds like watery mastitis. It's very hard to treat. The chunky version is more controllable. The watery type would explaine her symptoms. It's more of an attack on her body than the cheese style. Get her on...
