    Fly ear tags

I have already noticed the flies are starting to bother our cows.  I have never used fly ear tags. Do they work?  If so, I noticed there are tons of different kinds.  What does everyone like to use?

Glad everyone is doing well!  Congrats!

    Heifer wont let calf nurse

If the calf has not nursed three of her quarters, you might need to milk her out, especially if it has been several days.  The cow could get mastitis.  If you can milk her, save the milk to bottle feed the calf.  Just make sure there is no blood or cheese like lumps in the milk.  She may not...

    Blood in calves stool

It is very easy to test for coccidiosis.  Just take a stool sample to your vet and he can test it and let you know.  Coccidiosis can really affect your calves if left untreated.  It might turn out to be nothing, but it does not cost much to test them and know for sure what you are dealing with.

    Blood in calves stool

DLF- We just went through the same thing.  It was coccidiosis and if one has it, they may all get it.  We treated ours with Albon.  We had to make sure that they drank only the treated water for five days.  It was a pain to deal with, but the end result was okay.  One thing that you might want...

very good steer with a bad appetiate

Are you feeding him alone?  If so, you might try putting another calf in with him.  B-12 will also help his appetite. :)

You might try either some Calf Medic or Kick Start.  We get them at Tractor Supply, but your feed store might have them.

    Coccidiosis question

Thanks, again, for all the help.  We are now treating the whole herd with albon and it seems to be doing the trick. The calf has not really shown any signs of coccidiosis, so I am hoping we are okay there.

    Coccidiosis question

So that was my next question.  We are treating a cow who has a calf that is 2 weeks old.  Will the calf get what it needs in terms of treatment from her momma? Or should we be treating the calf also?

    Coccidiosis question

Thank you all for the responses.  This is the second day of treatment in the water, and I am still seeing blood in her feces.  I guess it just takes some time?

    Coccidiosis question

CPL- Thank you for responding to my post. We noticed some mucus/blood in her stool two days ago.  She has been in with other cattle, so we will be treating all of them. If I understand it correctly, they ingest the parasite with their feed or hay.  I am guessing that with all the rain we have...

    Coccidiosis question

We had a heifer diagnosed with coccidiosis and will be treating her with amprolium.  Has anyone had any experience with amprolium?  Specifically, have you drenched, put it in the water trough or given the pelleted feed? I am just wondering what is the most effective and easiest way to tackle...

    one heifer--twocalves--one week apart!!

I'm not a vet by any means, but I've heard that this can happen in humans too. I believe it's when the cow still ovulates although bred, causing a second egg to become fertilized. I've heard it's very rare! I'm sure there are people that know way more on here that will explain in more depth. I...

    Shorthorn Embryo's

I'm looking for some shorthorn embryo's to help strengthen our herd. Does anyone have any available? Thanks, Bonnie

    Anyone else have this problem?

Unfortunately, we do not do our own AI work, but instead haul them to be bred.  It always seems that at least one cow/heifer comes back lame from being ridden, yet at home they can come in heat, get mounted and don't have a problem.  Anybody else have this happen? I am hesitant to give the cow...

    Strange Cattle Deaths

Pete- I also had a cow get struck by lightning.  She was due to calf in two days when it happened. It never fails, she was the best cow in terms of breeding and offspring produced. Also had a horse break a leg in the barn when the floor was really wet and slippery.  I guess it goes with the...

    Eared cattle baby pics!!

I have a couple of grey brahman heifers that I raised.  They were orphans, and consequently, are the most gentle of all our cattle.  I would love a red brahman orphan, if you ever run across one!
