Do you have a creep pen set up so the calves are able to eat now?  I would advise you to let them start eating feed, but still allow them to nurse. Once they are eating creep feed pretty well, you can wean them and they will not be set back so much.

My first thought was lumpy jaw. We lost a cow to this recently.  The vet said to treat her with LA 200, but we were not able to save her.

Thank you for your responses!  I am relatively new to Steer Planet, and appreciate the info.  She was shown as a heifer, but that was 4 or 5 years ago.  She is not loosing weight, and her disposition is the same.  She has never been flushed or had her tail deadened. 

Does anyone know what would cause a cow to stop lifting her tail when she poops? It is causing manure to cling to either side of her tail, so I keep having to wash her off. My only guess is maybe she came in heat and one of the other cows jumped her and bruised her tail head????? Any thoughts...

When you attempt to bottle feed the calf, are you straddling her, with her head between your legs?  If you straddle her and hold her muzzle and squeeze to simulate sucking it will get them started.  I usually cup my hand under their chin and squeeze the bottle gently.  Try to keep her head at...

Try milking the cow and pour some of the milk on the calf.  This might help!

If you can't wait until Wednesday to go to Fredericksburg to the auction, there is one on Monday in Hondo and sometimes they have day old calves. 

If you are still looking for a bottle baby, you can go to the auction in Fredericksburg on Wednesday.  They normally have a few bottle babies, or even better, they will separate cow calf pairs if the momma is old.  These babies are usually healthier, because they have gotten their momma's first...

Terry- Thank you for your response. Have you used Cydectin before? I had a cow off being bred, and I think she came back with some lice.  I have heard that Cydectin is good, but have not used it, mainly because the "generic" Ivomec pour ons are more reasonably priced.  Thanks for the info!
