    Maines and Mainetainers

NOTE that 25% is our lowest percentage to register; Mainetainers are 25% to 62.5% (green registration papers); higher percentage animals are 75% - 100% (brown registration papers). What happens with the calves that are reg between 62.5% and 75%??? I was looking up what a calf would be on the...

    Bed and owned division

I agree completely, when we got into the cattle business my parents put all our cows into my name, after I was to old to show jr. EVERYTHING got transferred to my younger brother...whens hes to old they will ALL go to my sister. We have won a good deal of Bred and Owned div. and for us its a...

    Underrun Foot

We had one of our show heifers with the same problem in jan. They didn't call it "under run" but as soon as they took the pressure off she could put weight on it. We were getting her ready for a show so we packed it with icthomol (spelling is way off) put her on poly flex with some dex and then...

    I just dont understand

If you take that one unit and use it in IVF you could fert around 5 cows to it (providing the semen is decent quality). Last IVF cycle we did we transferred 9 embryos and got 6 pregs. If you multiply that 5 x 6 your up to around 30 pregs from that one unit of semen. Now with a bull this "hot"...

    registering?

I am not trying to say the resulting calf would "deserve" to have papers, I am just asking if it can be done.

    Planned C-sections

Thanks! As of now we are also very happy with the outcome. I kinda gave up on the thread as far as advice goes, just wanted to update everyone that was concerned. At the end of the day I care more about having a heathy momma and baby than I do about the numbers that will factor into it down the...

    Planned C-sections

Well just got in from the barn, c-section went great! Healthy bull calf, weighed in at 95lbs. A lil smaller than all the vets guessed but a c-section was still the best option. I will post pics later tonight. Thanks for all the advice, having an idea of what to expect made the process alot...

    Planned C-sections

No vets are not on every street corner waiting. Ours has about a 45 min drive without traffic. That is why it is being planned in the first place. We don't want to have to call the vet at 3 in the morning when she has been pushing for 2 hours and have to wait another hour or so for the vet to...

    Planned C-sections

You didn't answer my previous question on how c-sections YOU have done on your Cattle. I personally have performed 5 C-Sections... Each ended with a bullet to the skull of the female-- to A: do away with that bloodline, and B: give me a good reason not to "try" her again.  Our vet came out and...

    Planned C-sections

Thanks for all the support. The bull was not an angus, not sure where someone came up with that. He is a purebred shorthorn.

    Planned C-sections

For everyones question on the bull, he has been used on heifers before both in our herd and others. We leased him out about a year ago to a commercial guy (has angus/ herford and some maines mixed all up) that was very happy with his calves. We were the first owners to use him as a breeding...

    Planned C-sections

Thanks again for all the replies. The heifer was bred to a calving ease bull that has never thrown a calf over 70lbs, they have also all been unassisted. There were no red flags that went up when she was bred. We just look at it as a mating that just clicked differently and in the future will...

    Planned C-sections

Got the second opinion this morning and she needs one. It's going to be next Monday and I am supposed to induce on Sunday. I am going to pick up some fresh colostrum this weekend from my cousin that has dairy cattle. Any other thoughts on things that I should have on hand? Thanks again for all...
