fitting up a year old heifer for a show in may

I agree that you need to bring her up slowly on feed and I would go to a lower protein feed.  I don't know about the 3% that is going to depend on the feed, our heifer feed is to be fed at 2%.  You need to go to a feed mill or call any of the major companies, it would be best to find out what...

What is the definiton of "commercial"?

My self and my in-laws are breeding to make great heifers, we consider ourselves commercial cattle people, I run a small herd at my house while my in-laws have around a hundred head of cows at their place.  Most of our cattle are maines but we have serveral shorthorn and shorthorn influenced...

    Corn Stalks

We paid $30 for ours this year,  we run cattle on our own stalk fields so we don't bale any of our own.  We feed them in bale feeds just like hay, sometimes we rotate stalks then hay and sometimes we both out at the same time.  If its really cold or muddy we roll them out for bedding.

    4H heifer is spooky

I am assuming she is the only calf on your place?  I would get a small radio put in the barn where you keep her and let it play all the time,  and just go out and sit with her.  Talk to her but don't pressure her,  at first you might not want to look at her directly while you are talking to her...

    Maines and Mainetainers

I would also assume that all older 25% maintainers would keep the papers they have and not be down graded to the foundation certificates?

What is it with some people?

That was well said herfluvr, and not everybody from Illinois is grumpy and disrespectful.  I can't remember saying anything negative about anybodies cattle on here.  I don't understand some people their whole goal seems to be to bash people and cattle especially show cattle.  And it does seem...

    New bull! Texas Tornado!!!!

After saying what I said earlier I do think the bull will sell semen because of his cool look, color pattern, breeding, and his owners.  We also have show cattle and comercial cattle and a lot of our past show heifers end up producing freezer beef,  we don't get to caught up in the steers but...

    New bull! Texas Tornado!!!!

Seems like i'm jumping into a pissing contest but the only way to really know how sound he is and to see his true structure you need to see him walk and in his everyday clothes.  He does look strait in his hind leg at first sight but if you click on the picture to see the blown up version I...

    Horse slaughter

I think it is interesting when you try to research anything on horse slaughter you don't get any real information, just a bunch of whining form PETA and HSUS.  I have had horses and cattle most all of my life and to me they are the same.  My horses and my cows eat grass in the summer and hay in...

    Display Mats

If you have a rock quarry close to you or any place that has conveyer belts go talk to them.  We have several quarries close to us and you can get belting cheap or even free,  they change the belting pretty often so most of the time there is a lot laying around.

    Looking for new truck

I would look at a dodge with a 5.9 and a 6 speed, I had an 02 Dodge and put 100,000 on it in two and half years and had no problems and it got great fuel milage.  I traded it off on a Duramax and although I like the creature comforts of the chevy when it come to pulling a trailer the Dodge is...

    Clipper Blades

Those are made by Wahl and you can send them in to Wahl and have them sharpened or like it was said above about any show supply dealer.

    ACEPROMAZINE

That will work,  my question is how big is the heifer?  2cc in the mouth will calm a thousand pound calf down,  if she is really wild in the chute I would go ahead with the 2cc, and yes give it to her and wait a little bit,  when you give it in the mouth it takes a little while to take hold, if...

    show feed additives

We top dress with the meal, starting about three months ahead of our goal show, we start out at a half a pound a day and work up to two pounds. Its a great product that adds a smooth finish, just don't overdue it because it has a high amount of energy in a small amount of product.

    anybody feed this? corn gluten

I feed a half corn gluten half cracked corn to supplement my cows in the winter, I only feed about three pounds a day just to give them a little something extra.  My brother works for a guy that runs about 400 cows and they feed corn gluten straight, they use it for cows on winter pasture just...

    Denver bulls

There was a smoke colored Monopoly x all about who/char that I really liked called Color Me Up. There was also a PB shorthorn bull called Talledega that I liked, he was a beast! The Talledega bull came for Bod Dusis's dispersal last fall, they also sold a full brother that was older called...

Seems to me that you see a lot of colored up calves out of Monopoly, I don't know if that is coming from him or the cow?
