    Myty in Focus

So glad this thread was started!  We were thinking of using In Focus on our heifer just because of his popularity and numbers.  What is everyone's opinion on Upgrade?  Our hope is to have something our daughter can use and not just a first calf we have to send to the feedlot.  Our friend who is...

    2012 Fair picks

VC, your weather was one of the reasons we made the two hour drive to see the show!!  I totally agree with your thoughts on the judge.  My group though he was excellent (although our teenage girls weren't necessarily listening to his comments -they were surprisingly attentive to his movement...

    2012 Fair picks

I was at the show yesterday and was very impressed with the number of entries your fair has.  If I remember correctly the young man you are helping was in one of the more competitive classes.  He did a good job.  As you said it was pretty evident who worked with their animals and who just showed...

    cool collars

Wow would have never thought of that!  I'm asking specifically for in the grooming chute or while we are waiting outside the ring. We have fans for their stalls but the fitting area is so congested we can't use fans there. Obviously these don't work or someone would have posted singing their...

    cool collars

Thanks for explaining the difference between the two. Do they work?  Is there something better for helping to keep them cool/comfortable?

    cool collars

This is the exact question I just logged on to post!!  Our county fair looks like it might have temps in the low 80's.  Would either of these collars help keep our steers more comfortable?

    Negative experiences with Zilmax

We were looking at using it and were told to only use it on finished animals with plenty of fat.  can anyone who has used it please tell us which is correct.  It is my understanding it is meant to be used the last 20 days, less the 3 day withdrawal.

Any unknown tricks to fast-traking a steer ???

How is it fed?  We are getting some and I was told can be a sticky mess.

    3 way carcass class

Twisted I am right there with you, as a matter of fact an interview was what I was originally told would be the third part of the contest.  We were kind of blindsided when we went to weigh in and were told it would be a presentation instead.  My hope is they will find a way to make the scoring...

    3 way carcass class

Nkotb, the kids will still get to show their animals to be judged and placed in both market and showmanship classes. This change was only made in the carcass class.  Maybe our fair is different, but our carcass class is an additional competition the exhibitors can choose to be a part of, it...

    3 way carcass class

Our county fair is no longer using the judges placing as part of the carcass class.  The three parts of the contest are: average daily gain, carcass grading at slaughter, and scoring on a 3-5 min. presentation given the last day of the fair on any aspect of the beef industry the exhibitor...

    weird question

This is another odd suggestion, but try hand sanitizer.  My daughter took it to camp with her specifically to remove sap.  My sister in law read somewhere on line to try it and it worked like a charm!  (Think it's the alcohol in it that does the trick.)

    School Is Going Vegan!! HELP

Totally agree with Ms Ray.  This is something that needs to be taken to the school board by you and your parents.  A well written letter to the editor of your local paper might not hurt either.  Good luck!

    judges behavior...something to think about

I have to agree...partying at the winners camper just doesn't look right, and as a judge how things look to the contestants is important.  I have judged nonlivestock competitions and found sometimes it was nice to stay and socialize after the event is over, but I always made sure to mingle with...

    Honor show feed

We have been feeding it and have been very happy with the results so far.  Our steers lick the bottom of the pan clean!  I agree with the others, for the money their Power Fuel is wonderful and I have heard the same about Champ Drive.

    Finishing Strategy

What is everyone's strategy for finishing their steer and why?  Some people want to push them hard and hold them for months once they are close to finished while others prefer to have them finish just in time for the show.  I appreciate most of you here compete at many show over multiple months...

How long until "herd" accepts new steer?

I guess I shouldn't worry. We have always moved two or more together - he is our first solo - and he just looks so pathetic by himself. He is mixed in the group a little more this morning, but still not engaged with the others. I guess I need to just take a deep breath and relax!  Thanks.

How long until "herd" accepts new steer?

We just brought home a new steer and put him in our five acre pasture with our other two show steers and about ten head of corriente/longhorn cross heifers.  After their initial greeting our new guy just hangs out on the fringe of the group by himself. Can anyone tell me how long I should expect...

How to make wet beet pulp more appetizing?

We have one steer that prefers his dry and another that likes his just dampened.  As long as we mix it in well with their grain they don't seem to notice!

Why isn't grass hay good for show steers?  I was told not to feed alfalfa hay, but bermuda grass was fine......what is the best hay to feed?
