    Bull calves "accidentally" banded

Yes, he forgot to tell the vet that 4 big ones needed left intact...he accepted the blame...no lawsuit! He plans on keeping them and taking a chance; I was just seeing what the likelihood is that they will not have problems. Appreciate all the responses.

    Bull calves "accidentally" banded

no emasculator.... I told Jim the same thing...maybe with feed as high as it is, just band them and move on.  But he really likes the bulls.  They would be simmy-angus bulls for use in his own herd.  Out of purebred Simmy cows and a  Big Daddy son (Angus) that's pretty darn good.  I haven't...

    Bull calves "accidentally" banded

Amended the original post...emasculator wasn't used, but the "ratchet-type" bander....not the little pre-made rubber bands....

    Bull calves "accidentally" banded

Had a friend tell me yesterday that he was working about 100 calves with the vet, when he had to leave to move panels to a different pasture.  Vet and assistant continued running calves through the chute while he was gone.  He had told the vet that there were a few young calves that needed...

Coach... Not sure if we'll have anything down there this year...if not, probably won't make it.  I'll keep you posted if we head that way. Have a good one.

Grazing corn stalks with lots of corn....

To control grazing to certain amounts (limit corn intake), you can always fence with a hot-wire and move the fence daily....it's work, but you can make certain that only so much new feed is available each day.

    Heatwave 5 Market heifer

Thanks, Phil. I did price her at $50 under fat price to a neighbor...with no guarantees other than she will calve before April 10th.  Just really bothers me to potentially take one to the locker with a calf in her.

    Heatwave 5 Market heifer

Need some opinions. Son got done with county fair with his Heat Wave 5 market heifer.  We did breed her just to keep her from cycling.  She's due to calve late March to a Built Right son.  The only other Heatwave we've had around didn't  really know how to milk.  If this one is out of a good...

    County Fair Report - Nebraska

Just got the Nance County Fair completed last week here in Nebraska .  Thought I'd give a report. Our fair is pretty small, with around 35 market animals and another 35 to 40 breeding animals. My son, Tres,  is 9, so this is his second year showing.  He's out there every step of the process...

    First for me!

Simple answer...take care of the people that you sold one too (encourage them), or else keep your opinions to yourself. I'm sure that buyer won't be back.

    upcoming feed costs

Creep feed at our local store jumped this week from $309 per ton to $470.... We feed ignitor (ADM) at weaning.  It's a wonderful product and the calves wean great on it...I think it was $.18 per pound last year.  The local feed store said it will be .31 per pound bagged, .29 in bulk this year...

    Picture Pen Question?

I agree with leanbeef that an open background is best...however, in many of our situations, that isn't possible.  I've seen some nice catalog pictures with round bales as the background. Do the best you can.

Does anyone have a spray bottle that works good and lasts when using the oil based fly sprays like Vapona?  About every one I try fizzles out pretty quickly. Thanks.

    Looking to purchase Hay

Looking to purchase Hay With the drought conditions in Nebraska, I am looking for hay available to purchase.  We need some Alfalfa for ourselves, and have several friends and customers looking for grass or alfalfa.  If it can be purchased right, we are not opposed to shipping long distances. ...

    Hay Prices in your area

I'm gonna keep tabs on you guys in the states with extra hay....in our own operation, we have enough hay ground that we should be in decent shape, but I have several customers who are in dire need.  I know you're half way across the country, but I will let them know what's out there... It is...

    Hay Prices in your area

Wondering if hay prices are sky-rocketing across the whole country, or just in certain areas.  Our alfalfa price in Nebraska has gone from $125/Ton a year ago for the good stuff all the way up to $225 to $250, if you can even find it.  Hay is nearly impossible to find.  Have lots of friends...

The resurrection of the 1980's simmentals

My only memory about Black Max.... A former prominent Simmental breeder, who was a professional bull rider in his younger days, always said he wanted to find a pasture full of Black Max daughters and breed them Brahman to make some rodeo bulls...he said that the Black Max sired cows were the...
