    heifer help

cattle can't sweat; they cool themselves by panting, like a dog or a pig or a sheep. If your animal is wet it would probably be a condensation of cold, wet air on her warm body. This is not a healthy environment for a cow; damp, cold air can be a trigger for pneumonia starting.

    Milkman cows

we have several cows aged 4-6 sired by Milkman; can't tell you how large their udders are..... the cows themselves are larger framed, well muscled; their calves do grow and aren't small at weaning; believe they milk just fine.

    Milkman cows

you don't judge milking ability by size of udder; you judge it by size of calf.

    Me vs. Trausch Farms

I'm pretty sure you can go after them; I know of an incidence not exactly the same but where an animal sold for close to ten grand; turned out the animal had been exposed to a disease, before it left the seller's, where the animal either had to be destroyed or the buyer's farm had to be...

    Selling cattle on here

I really don't think all ppl intend to misrepresent; I think they just don't know..... they think if their "show" calves are sired by Monopoly or Heatwave, that they are a show calf and they've heard how much those "show calves" bring and they believe that they have produced a show calf.  They...

Where does all the money come from?

we live in cattle country when you can take any type or breed of healthy 500 lb. steer to the salebarn and receive over $1500, you start running into tax problems.  our herds out here are about 200 to 500 head; the cattle people finally have their day; the grain farmers have had theirs, now...

    are online sales legit?

running calves up online with phantom bids is no different than at a live auction where field reps run bidders up with phantom bids.

Best bulls for a heat wave heifer

the very few we have calved out seemed compromised in their pelvic area; they couldn't even have a small calf easily....however, once we got them beyond that second calf, they calved on their own; have a charlois sired steer calf out of our 11 year old Heatwave cow that looks to be a great...

    Show Cattle Prices

Wessington Springs is known as the club calf capital in the nation; might help if you get off the beaten path and find calves west river South Dakota; road less traveled..... we have always maintained that you can go out into a large herd that is strictly commercial that buys maine bulls like...

    Char cross heifer we raised

Is now a good time to buy embryos?

We have for a number of years now raised our own clean up bulls by purchasing embryos; the price of a yearling purebred bull (Angus and Simmental) is astronomical...you can purchase amazing purebred genetics for a small fraction of the cost of a pb bull with the same genetic background in an...

What are you planning for your beef herd with record prices?

We have been ranching for 40+ years....my dad long before that; we are not doing anything different than ever.  We are culling the cows we need to, we have not stopped keeping replacements.  We are perhaps trying to put on some more pounds on those cull cows; got $1/lb. for a 14 year old cow...

    Galant Semen

Anyone use Alpine Polled Proto? he was maybe not a true "original" but he was a great female maker; they were moderate, milked very heavily.... our herd started with Sultan and Paresian. believe Sultan was ASA 4 and Paresian ASA 1. my dad was one of the first in the state to raise Simmis.

Anyone have experience with a small intestine blockage on a calf?

we had a blocked intestine because the calf had eaten a small piece of net wrap from a bale. the vet didn't figure it out at all until the post after the calf was dead. they never figured it was that.
