I would say the cow has just had bad luck; when we have a 6 week early calf, we write it off as an abortion; we have never had a cow do this twice. twins can be tough to carry to term; just as in ppl, twins are likely to be born early because of all the weight and volume in the cow's uterus...

we keep a load of gravel close by and dump that where ever needed during icy months... whatever it costs, it pays for itself if it saves only one animal.

the line Mr. Ingalls said that impacted me was "they (the cows) were waiting for me to come for them"....in reference to a group of cows he was unable to get to after the rain and when the snow was getting really bad; and that I take it, ultimately died. I do think the burden these ranchers...

we had a calf die because of his gut being stopped up with net wrap; vets couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, then posted him after he died... net wrap.... as bad as I hate the twine on bales, I would never use net wrap; we had bought a few net wrapped bales is how that calf got it.

thank you Sizzler; I hadn't read it well enough.... second calf cows also need a somewhat easy calving experience. We have had a number of I-80 calves and they have been fine; good vigor, does add some frame as stated. Mercedes Benz is also a nice calver.

for her first calf, all you need to worry about is her getting through that experience safely. Milkman will kill her, Hannibal is not heifer safe....she is pretty small and she needs a guaranteed calving ease sire for her very first calf.  The first calf sets your cow up for the rest of her...
