Lowest US cow/heifer inventory since 1941.

we see first hand the reason why there are fewer and fewer cows in our country..... first would be the gov't payments and crop insurance offered by our gov't to dirt farmers giving them no risk to plant a crop; those farmers have taken out fences here, plowed up pasture land to the roads...

Cattle Problems Explained: Thirty Original Essays, 1880, by J. W. Clarke

obviously, cattle that are left to survive in compromised conditions are hardier, more athletic, breed and calve easier because of the law of nature... "survival of the fittest". they would be "harder" in that their muscling would be more developed, minimal body fat; like a body builder (no...

    Recip cows

ten years or more ago, we used to put in embryos for ppl...... we used good big simmi cows and they came and got them early so they could feed them hard. it wasn't a great money making deal at all; what bothered me the most is the receipts that got set back in their calving dates. not only are...

    Early Calving

I would say the cow has just had bad luck; when we have a 6 week early calf, we write it off as an abortion; we have never had a cow do this twice. twins can be tough to carry to term; just as in ppl, twins are likely to be born early because of all the weight and volume in the cow's uterus...

    Cow slipped on ice...advice!

we keep a load of gravel close by and dump that where ever needed during icy months... whatever it costs, it pays for itself if it saves only one animal.

    Duff Angus Bulls

we use Duff Palermo cause he is owned by very good friends of ours. they told us to expect big birth weights but we weren't prepared for how big they are. however, after growing those calves out and now having breds sired by him, we continue to use him.... they are unmatched in depth, stoutness...

    Calf weak after hard pull

keep after him; those difficult deliveries have often been oxygen deprived in their brains before/during delivery... they will recover in a couple days. good thought with the dex....helps reduce the swelling. keep momma interested in him....

    County Show = Popularity Contest

lol.... I started on reading this whole thread wayyyyyy too late and I am not going to read through the great amount of posts on it, but this very thing happened in our county about 15 years ago; a parent was unhappy because his son, who had the res. champ hog got less at the premium sale than...

    How long to wait?

a cow/heifer has to calve quick here to go without at least a palpation. when we palpate, if the calf is up high enough, we pull; if you research it, it has been proven that a quick, easy delivery results in a quicker breed back time; we don't see any purpose in letting a cow/heifer wait and...

Looks like we have a predator in our midst!!

we have a group of cows with fall babies right almost in front of our house; we saw a coyote pacing the fence between our house and the yard of cattle; our dog was barking up a storm and one really aggressive, mean cow was charging at the predator through the fence; we have coyotes on the prowl...

    South Dakota blizzard recovery

the line Mr. Ingalls said that impacted me was "they (the cows) were waiting for me to come for them"....in reference to a group of cows he was unable to get to after the rain and when the snow was getting really bad; and that I take it, ultimately died. I do think the burden these ranchers...

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

we had a calf die because of his gut being stopped up with net wrap; vets couldn't figure out what was wrong with him, then posted him after he died... net wrap.... as bad as I hate the twine on bales, I would never use net wrap; we had bought a few net wrapped bales is how that calf got it.

Follow up on Blizzard Atlas in South Dakota

We posted a thread on here showing the effects of the early winter storm in South Dakota the first of October; thus far, very little has been done in D.C. to assist the ranchers whom suffered unthinkable losses. However, in the private sector, there have been efforts to aide them.... Heifers...

    What to breed her to????

thank you Sizzler; I hadn't read it well enough.... second calf cows also need a somewhat easy calving experience. We have had a number of I-80 calves and they have been fine; good vigor, does add some frame as stated. Mercedes Benz is also a nice calver.

    What to breed her to????

for her first calf, all you need to worry about is her getting through that experience safely. Milkman will kill her, Hannibal is not heifer safe....she is pretty small and she needs a guaranteed calving ease sire for her very first calf.  The first calf sets your cow up for the rest of her...
