One of the more frustrating things for me in regards to searches is the fact that if you do manage to find more than 1 Shorthorn in a search result you have to start the search over for each animal you want to look at on that list.

Matt,it does take some time to learn the ropes, especially for the computer illiterate like me.I think there is the potential to find a wealth of information in the site once some things are fixed, entered, and processes made more user friendly.I guess I am surprised at the fact that they...

    For Mark Tennenbaum

Took this one last month,He is 18 months here.He ran with the cows at the end of the breeding season but according to the vet,his Daddy got them all.

There does appear to be a correlation between higher marbling and the heavier milking type cattle which typically have a phenotype quite different than the type sought by most grass finishers.Breed average is .06 so I think it could be quite possible to develop a line of grass fed type...

9b here as well, well balanced and the best rear 1/3 by the pictures presented. Huntaway is right a group effort will move us farther faster.I like the idea of using multiple herds rather than 1 or 2 large test herds to avoid a regional or environmental bias. I can't resist kicking a dead...

Beebe,The Association needs to clean up the website.A potential customer won't work as hard as I  did to find answers.I think this thing will be great once its cleaned up and it will enhance the perception that we want accurate data.Breeders can help in the process by checking their own herd...

Cattle look good Dan,I can still see that ''Diamond '' phenotype'' I first saw 17 years ago. I have been digging around a little on the ASA website in search of high marbling Shorthorn bulls and it has been a challenge.I did a strictly marbling search with a minimum of.49 using marbling as the...

    New WHR for Shorthorns

Justintime,I agree with everything you said about the importance of a breed magazine, some of the problems faced by these magazines, and the value of advertising. The one thing I would take exception with is your idea that a breeder should try to change the image of a magazine by spending money on...

    New WHR for Shorthorns

Let me first say that I am not against the Shorthorn Country and what they do.In response to your post Dan I guess I would start by referencing the editorial by our executive secretary in this months Country. Then take into account that the news and info in SC is at least 40-45 days old.I...

    New WHR for Shorthorns

JTM,For me content is not the issue, making it mandatory to buy an individuals product to be eligible for membership is wrong.I would call that a Chicago style business model.

    New WHR for Shorthorns

Making it mandatory to purchase a Shorthorn country subscription is totally wrong the way I see it. They are making us pay so that an individual can profit.Unless the ASA is taking over  the magazine again there is no way to rationalize this.

    New WHR for Shorthorns

I don't like to spend money any more than the next guy but when you put things in perspective 100.00 is not too bad. When I started in the 1970's dues was 10.00 and quickly went to 15.00. You paid to register the calf, paid to transfer a calf and paid a fee for each step of the way for any...

    optimum weaning weights

Profit per acre is valuable but you need to evaluate the production or profitability of the individual cow. A manufacturing business might be profitable as a whole, but there may be production lines within that business that need more input to produce at an optimum level. You need to be able to...

    optimum weaning weights

Weight and price received are only part of the equation in determining optimum. The cost of production being the third part.Xbar referenced the percentage of the dams body weight weaned which I feel is one of the best measurements of this factor.

Fall season in the Bitterroot Valley

Very impressive Ralph. The uniformity of those bull calves shouts out focused, planned and disciplined breeding program. The picture of the pair plainly states PROFIT and the data backs it up.Even more amazing is the fact that these results were achieved without the benefits of hybrid vigor. I...

    For Mark Tennenbaum

Kibler,I do plan to use him.I thought I had a rear view shot but must have deleted it.I think he is a well balanced calf all the way around.I would guess him around 1400, he hasn't been babied.

Here is the calf pictured this summer at not quite 15 mo.He had been on grass and hay only for about 2 months at this time.No hair so you can see what he really is.
