Polled Durhams and Shorthorns at 1904 Worlds Fair

The Lavender Sultan you pictured was used in the Harding herd and is a different bull than the L.S. bull that Haumonts used. You should know by now that all good things come from Illinois aside from government.Whitehall Sultan was born on the Illinois state fairgrounds and the Marshall strain...

Polled Durhams and Shorthorns at 1904 Worlds Fair

Librarian, in a highly condensed version here is an answer to the questions you had in your previous post.J.H.Miller Peru Indiana was the fountainhead for the polled deal.He had first purchased the nucleas of polled Shorthorns that a guy by the name of Crane had gathered in Ohio. These included...

    Justamere Todd

Beebe, Oakwood used a grandson of Roselawn Marshall and linebred back to him well into the 50's.

    Justamere Todd

It was good to view the topic on Oldhorn again and gain some insight on some of the things we talk about on here from someone who was involved first hand.I had forgotten that he had talked about the Duchess of Gloster xAvondale/Whitehall Sultan cross in one of his posts. The picture below is the...

    Nodak King's Tradition

Mcleod was 60'' tall which would have him just touching a 7 frame score.Too small for the times which was fine with me.

    Collecting Data

I would contact the breeder of the bull and see if he would co op with you especially if you collect data through harvest. The data is valuable to him as well even more so if you know the ancestry of your cows and have previously collected data on them.

    Nodak King's Tradition

Librarian, earlier on you asked about the bottom side of Mcleods pedigree and Oakview was correct in saying there was a  lot of Sandy Ridge breeding in that pedigree. The Sandy Ridge cattle behind Mcleods pedigree had a lot of Haumont and Indiana polled dual breeding which was basically my...

We are changing our herd away from Shorthorn

If your main profit center is selling feeder calves you should be crossbreeding anyway. That goes for the guys who have a black herd and have used Angus bulls for the last 30 years as well.In light of that who has the greatest potential for market growth Shorthorns or Angus? If you based the...

    Nodak King's Tradition

I thought we should of clarified our definition of outlier right after I posted. Thanks for doing that and we are closer than our posts might have reflected.

    Nodak King's Tradition

My breeding philosophy is probably the polar opposite of Oakviews.I believe that improvement comes from getting rid of the outliers.I have been in this business long enough to know that there are always those surprises that come along but two full brothers from a heinz 57 pedigee built on...

    Nodak King's Tradition

I have neglected to say it but I have a great deal of respect for Dean Fieser. There were many things that impressed me at our short meeting and they have only been reinforced with the interactions I have had with him since. Librarian,One of the most frustrating things for me has been the lack...

    Nodak King's Tradition

I agree on that udder Kibler.I should point out that these were heavy milking cows and that they were 12 and 13 years old when these pictures were taken. The bottom cow Helianthus 5a weaned her last calf after she was 14.I only recorded her last 9 calves but she kicked one out every spring like...

    Nodak King's Tradition

I saw Lancer 457 at the International when he was champion bull.He impressed me with his soundness, length of body and he appeared to have a much higher degree of natural muscling than the norm at that time.As impressed with 457 as I was,I wanted Mcleod for the Rorvig influence which pedigree...

    Nodak King's Tradition

In 1984 I got a ride from a trucker friend of mine to Union Station in Chicago, left the station with 80.00 in my pocket and rode the train into Dodge City Kansas.I rented a car there although I had to call home to get a credit card#from an Aunt I believe and drove to Plains Kansas. There I made...

    Loving farm sale

Great point Okotoks,Those bulls should be in high demand for the value of the cows behind them alone.Cows that produce like that are where the real money is made in the cattle business.

    Loving farm sale

You raise some excellent points and questions XBAR and I appreciate the fact that you do not just take things at face value.I will address what I can, the rest may take a generation or two before we get the answers.Let me first say that no matter what the breeding or environment, the achievments...

    Loving farm sale

I think that the lot 7 is a bull that can satisfy all the various camps within the breed from calving ease at all cost to optimum to performance at all costs.I think that they could even agree that he took a bad picture.I congratulate the Lovings for providing all of this information that allows...
