    Red Angus Redemption bull

Saw a bunch of bulls at a sale last March.  Decent bulls, moderate, but what struck me was that they were far hairier than the other sire groups.  It was a fairly normal day and most of them were panting where the others took the stress far better. Made me think.  I personally am staying away...

    Dying vs. Dyeing

Three threads on dying cattle and they are all still alive. Amazing. Dying is the condition of losing one's life. Dyeing is the act of changing something's color. It quit being amusing and started making my head hurt.  I had to correct it at the risk of being retentive. Carry on.

    Blue Roan Simmentals????

Good thing the black Simmis aren't an Angus trademark.  Seriously.  ::)

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

Wrap comes off without exception.  Trying to get a piece I missed out of the compacted snow/ice is not fun. Waiting to see if we lose something to impaction is a costly experiment.  Cattle die of enough things I can't control.

Had to ship old PERICLES today

Sorry to hear it, I have admired him for years. The old boys that stick around so long get to be friends. Can I ask why?

Red Angus bull "Buf Crk The Right Kind U199

So far I can say with the few I have he will add thickness and bone for a calving ease bull. It seems that he won't improve leg structure, but won't make it worse, since the calves I have this year have basically the same as their dam's.  The heifer calved out fine, is likely bred back (PG...

    Red Angus question

I am always astounded by those who look only at BW and ignore the CED EPD's.  There are a lot of low BW bulls in the Red Angus breed with horrible calving ease numbers.  You have to look at the big picture!  I also won't trust a "fire and ice" mating (very popular lately to make those great big...

Could the black hided deal backfire on people?

Seriously?  :o One look at the webpage that spit that crap out will confirm it's lack of credibility. I hope you were joking.

Could the black hided deal backfire on people?

Thought I used clean bulls, too, until DD came along, then whoops! I have 3 cows potentially bred to a carrier SimAngus bull.  This is not the first time it has happened to me, I have a talent for selecting bulls that will end up carrying a defect later on (OS, MA, now DD). And don't lean on...

    Polymelia in Angus cattle

Someone on CT posted a link as well. http://www.progressivecattle.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5430:new-research-uncovers-genetic-resistance-to-salmonella&catid=120:herd-health&Itemid=159 Distilled down, there is a gene that confers resistance to Salmonella.  If you are...

    Polymelia in Angus cattle

I have a hard time understanding the fear myself.  Test with full disclosure.  It's not that hard . All the Angus association has to do is propagate the notion that carrier animals make better show calves/carcasses/fill in the blank, and it will be no problem, worked great in the club calf...

Any thoughts on Red Simmental Bulls out there

No doubt he might have something to offer, but many would cringe at his BW and CE EPDs.  Hard to sell any Simmi bulls around here with those kind of numbers, even though Angus or RA with far worse CE will sell no problem. Whatever.  ??? I tried Traxs Rushmore (ABS) and got a pretty good heifer...

    Johne's and Calving Ease bulls

FWIW I would keep testing those daughters annually.  If the one heifer isn't two yet she isn't nearly old enough to trust the test, which isn't super reliable either.  You can trust the positives but there will be plenty of false negatives.  That's why Johnes is such a nightmare to get rid of...
