    Calving ease shorthorn question

I'm hesitant to use Ronan on heifers since he required assistance despite having an actual BW of only 72lbs. I am curious to see how his calves turn out though.

    Fertagyl

It's the only gnrh form we've used in 20+ years here. Over the long-run I'd say we're right at the average AI conception of mid 60% between the dairy and beef cattle we set up.

    Cough Help.

Have you had a vet out to look at her? If Excede isn't working then it's probably viral rather than bacterial and you should stop wasting your money on antibiotics.

    What is everybody else witnessing?

I got a good little chuckle out of this, but I'm pretty sure he's referring to the van in Scooby-Doo

    Outsider and perfection?

I think you're better off if the 'big dogs' don't experiment with some of the bulls you'd like to try. As soon as they try a new bull, plenty of people line up to copy them and the price skyrockets. Boardwalk is a great example--if memory serves, he sold for $2500 in Leveldale's online sale...

    Breeding suggestions--clubby

I appreciate the input! His calf videos looked pretty shaggy, would he help put some shag on a cow that's less inclined to throw hair?

    Breeding suggestions--clubby

I was really hoping to see something like IGWT or Hi Ho Silver pop up here because we would really like to get a cream colored calf with lots of hair for the marketing avenue we have in mind. Since you mentioned Monopoly, do you have any experience with Hi Ho Silver on shorthorns? Also, how are...

WID seems to have some size from the pics/videos I'm seeing, would he add some grow to a more moderate cow?

    Breeding suggestions--clubby

Sired by Saskvalley Stampede out of a Saskvalley Roughneck cow from Gar-Lind. I'll consider purebred options, but we'd like to go in the Plus direction with our couple clubby calves--that way we won't be tempted to keep them for our breeding herd.

    Breeding suggestions--clubby

We've decided it would be fun to breed a couple cows clubby each year to take to a couple shows. I thought it would be fun and interesting to see how you all would breed this Shorthorn cow for a clubby calf? She's probably 14-1500lbs and frame 5.5 to 6.

Is it Worth Marketing A Crossbred Bull

I second this. If you aren't going to use him yourself, don't waste the time and resources. A great feeder calf is still a great feeder calf.

    The cover of Shorthorn Country

Beef Shorthorn bans polled cattle because they don't trace back to the Coates herdbook.. why don't we ban polled shorthorns right along with the black noses if we're going the purist route? I was under the impression that polling occured naturally in Shorthorns, and have witnessed it at first...

    The cover of Shorthorn Country

Shorthorn Beef association doesn't explicitly forbid it. They ban "colours and markings foreign to the breed" which leaves the black noses paired with roan/red/white hair coats up to interpretation. Beef Shorthorn association Rules and Regs don't even address coat color, and neither does the...

    dutch belted

I had a Homedale Blizzard 820 daughter with a band like that on only one side. She went 4/5 siring calves with the band on the opposite side, and the only calf without was solid white.

    Proposed Colorado livestock legislation

I wholeheartedly agree. Personally, I'd rather be in Oklahoma than Denver in January, and if they want to be more ag-friendly then that's even more incentive to switch.

    Proposed Colorado livestock legislation

Here's my non-conspiracy-theory 2 cents on why the subject isn't being discussed more: The only coverage this subject is getting is about how this will harm producers. In reality, these stories aren't going to change public perceptions or make anyone voting in Denver care. Word needs to spread...

    Electrolytes

I was thinking through what I needed to do for preparation, one thing being washing out the trough. That made me think about differences in water taste since ours is higher in Iron. I figured if the water is going to taste strange either way, couldn't hurt to put a packet or two in there? Also...

    Electrolytes

We have a group of 3 open heifers and 3 bred heifers coming ~15 hours next week with the breds exposed for March calves. Would it be worthwhile to get some electrolyte powder for putting in the water trough when they arrive? It's a large Ritchie free-stall trough that holds ~40 gallons.

    Performance enhancing drugs-cattle

Trenbolone Acetate is the real 'Big Bad Wolf' out there.. Test wouldn't do much for those show bulls because the amount they naturally produce is much higher than what's in the bottle. Tren, on the other hand, would make them change. It is legal in cattle (market heifers only on-label), but is...

Cow Doesn’t Seem to Have Much Milk- Help?

How long ago did she calve? When was she due? Sometimes if a (dairy) heifer drops her calf more than a few weeks early, she won't have much of an udder right away. But in most of those cases, she will catch up quickly and by day 4 or 5 her udder will be as big as it's going to get. I'd assume...
