New Steer! He needs a name!

I’ve decided to call him Xeno, thank you for all the suggestions. I can’t wait for him to get a bit older so we can wean him and I can start working with him properly and start washing him. His first show will either be mid September or late October depending on my exams and what the rest of...

New Steer! He needs a name!

Thank you!! Originally I was going to call him Xavi but my friend is calling her steer Xavier so that would get pretty confusing. Although last year we had a kid and a steer with the same name lol 😂.

New Steer! He needs a name!

I’ve just gotten my last ever show steer 😢 Well at least my last one with my school, and he needs a name. We follow the stud year letters for names, so calves born in 2026 will have names beginning with X. He was born late January so he’s just about 5 months old, still on his mum but we’ve...

    showmanship judging

I didn’t end up placing but a few of my teammates and my friend and her sister got into the finals for their age groups

    showmanship judging

The main thing i noticed with this judge is that she asked everyone about their animal, until we started running late and they sped up the heats a bit. Another thing of note which u may already be doing is getting your steer used to loud and sudden noises. A speaker started playing music really...

    showmanship judging

Thanks!! I was there yesterday helping the committee set up panels for the show and they’ve offered for me to come and see how they organise everything and mark the judging which will be really cool!!

    showmanship judging

I show with my school, i wish i could have my own cattle! I’ve been showing with my school for 5 years now and i graduate soon so i need to find someone to show with after school. I think if i get a chance at the show next week i’m gonna go and talk to some people but I’ll probably end up having...

    showmanship judging

Ooo sounds fun! All our cattle are Angus cross, their sire is angus and their dams are mostly angus x murray grey. We also have a couple speckle parks and we’ve just bought a few shorthorns too. My two steers are an Angus x and a fleckvieh that we were given as a part of a competition for next...

    showmanship judging

When’s your first show this season?? I’ve got my last one for my two steer’s next week so I can let you know what the judge says in showmanship (we call it parading where i’m from)

    showmanship judging

I’m sure there’s difference in showmanship judging in America and Australia (which is where I’m from) but I remember at one show I was at the kid in first place stopped showing off his steer once he placed but the kid in second didn’t and the judge swapped them so that’s always something I’ve...

    Clipping cattle with short hair

I have a steer (the one in my profile picture) whose hair isn’t very long and won’t stick up at all, I’ve only had him a few months and about a month and a half of that I didn’t see him once so I haven’t had a chance to wash him regularly. He’s going to his first show in 2 weeks and then two...

Advice for training a steer to stand straight when washing

Thank you for your help! I’m on concrete so unfortunately t posts are not an option, and we dont have anywhere where we could put them where a hose could reach, the closest I could get would be to get one of my mates to stand next to him and hold him, which is what I’ve been trying to do but...

Advice for training a steer to stand straight when washing

Thanks for the suggestion, I would if I could but there’s no tap near it and it’s also in a spot that has horrible drainage so the whole shed would turn to mud if I did, we used to wash there but we stopped because of the mud issue. I can’t move it either, the closest I could get to that would...

Advice for training a steer to stand straight when washing

I need advice on how to train my steer to stand straight when I wash him. He’s generally fine when I’m brushing him but as soon as I get the hose he pins himself to the fence and will only let me wash one side, it’s the same side every time too. I only get about 2-2.5 hours with him every day...
