    Huff N Puff

Keeping this one a bull. He is a Huff N Puff out of a Frostproof cow we bought from Kris Black 8 years ago. He’s on the grass side of the fence for a reason: he was gaining 4 lbs a day on the other side.  Big nutted and gentle enough to ride (well, almost). Will be ready this fall to service...

    PHA or Nay?

I have never had a PHA calf so I am not sure about this one.  It is out of a Yellow Repo X Mono Heifer and sired by either Size Matters or Smoking Joe (I bred her to both bulls same day).  Both bulls are listed as PHA free. It was born this morning 5/16/18 but wasn't due until September 15th. ...

    Cows With Guns, Well Almost!

There are about 30 baby calves in this pasture.  The momma cows did not like the presence of a sounder of hogs this morning.  I shot a couple of the sows and the cows pitched in.  I saw them do this to a coyote once but I didn't have a camera. https://youtu.be/i67PgbA4bno

    Udderly Important!

Some say milk and good udders aren't important if you are raising show steers.  I have seen it stated from one very prominent steer guru that "it is not what they raise but what they produce that is most important."  I assume that by "produce" he meant the quality steers that are produced...

Has Anyone Used Texas Trophy Hunter?

I have had a few calves out of Texas Trophy Hunter and wondered if any other SP members tried this bull.  Here is a photo of the most recent one out of a Who Made Who second calf heifer. They are vigorous at birth and seem to handle our Texas heat better than most.

    Crimson Tide on Heifers

I had good luck using Crimson Tide on first calf heifers.  Has anyone else used him on heifers?  I had four that way.  Three were bulls and one was a heifer.  Here is one of the bull calves born Sept 1st out of a Monopoly X Sim heifer.

    Crooked Rear Feet

We had a heifer calf out of a popular club calf sire and a Char X cow born last week.  It was born with slightly crooked or curved rear feet.  Everything else about the calf appears normal.  Does anyone on SP have any experience with this condition?  I also wonder if the feet will straighten up...

Laughter is the best medicine, right?

After a day at the office, I came home to find this 600 lb bull calf stuck in a name brand hay ring I had purchased thinking it would save hay.  It was kind of like a minnow trap--he just couldn't figure out how to get out.  So the onlly thing to do was to pull the ring with the tractor.  The...

    BoviPreg for pregnancy detection?

I recieved an emai from a company in Canada promoting their new pregnancy detection test kit called BoviPreg.  You just place either urine, blood or milk on the test strip and results are known in five minutes.  The test can determine pregnancy in as little as 18 days post insemination.  Has...

    Dry Tank with Water

Yes, this photo was taken in Texas.  It was taken yesterday of our normally "dry" tank.  Even in a wet year it hardly ever catches any water.  I think it is ironic that, during the worst drought in 100 years, this sorry old tank is full of water, thanks to a fast 2 and 2/4 inch rain.  The first...

    Semen theft in Ohio, really!

    Last Grass Standing

Yesterday, I turned the cows into our last pasture with any grass.  Soon the creek will be dry as well.  Many Texas ranchers have it much worse than we do.  I know that the mid-west has been devasted by floods and tornados but drought is much less flamboyant and rarely makes the headlines. ...

August Black Baldy Steer Central Texas

Our buyer "welched" so this really cool August steer sired by Carpe Diem out of a Char X Cunia X Meyer cow is back on the market.  He is moderate, thick butted with a nice profile.  Would make a good country fair slick steer or with hair for Forth Worth (look at those ears).  He is gentle as a...

Here is a cool made, laid back August Carpe Diem Steer out of a Char X Cunia X Meyer heifer.  He is very moderate, has good hair and lots of thickness.  Would work for Fort Worth light weight class or slick show and would be perfect for a first time showman as he is dog gentle (note my 9 year...

    Can These Heifers Show Chi?

I have some nice heifers out of Monopoly, Walks Alone and Who Made Who.  I see that Monopoly and WMW are both registered Chi.  Couldn't find any information on Walks Alone.  Does anyone know if heifers by these bulls can be registered as Chi and shown at San Antonio and other shows that have Chi...

    No Apologies

Tried to get Polar Ice semen back in October but he was sick and not collecting.  Tried No Apologies at Kris Black's suggestion.  Got excellent conception but I was wondering if anyone has any No Apologies calves on the ground and how they look?  Also, birth weights.

Fire Water for slick smokey steers

Does anyone have any experience with TC Fire Water?  I was intrigued by his photo but the video not so much.  He appears to be too round and too nervous.  I thought he may be a good choice for slick shear smokey steers but after seeing the video I am not so sure. <object width="480"...
