Alphatoxin and the midwest corn crop

Our local feed guy just got back from the Midwest and says that alphatoxin is going to be a big issue for corn coming from there. Are you guys with corn up there seeing it?

Taming a calf that fears/hates its owners

We sold a calf this spring to a guy and long story short, the calf is now afraid of him and his fight instinct has kicked in when he’s around.  It’s spilled over into the way the calf is around his daughter as well. He called me on Sunday and said they’re probably going to have to send him to...

    Swollen nose on live calf

We had a pretty tough pull yesterday and when we got the calf out, his nose was swollen.  In fact, it was swollen to the point that when I first went in to check him I thought we had lost the calf. I always thought the swelling comes after they die.  Does this just mean we were about to lose...

    Calfhood Vaccination and Temperature

I know we're not supposed to do the 7-way vaccination when the temp gets above ~80 degrees. How about calfhood brucellosis shots? We'll obviously have to call the vet any way but we're working cattle tomorrow, won't call the vet till the morning, and just trying to make plans.

    "A rib too long"

Can somebody explain the logic behind why length of body in a market steer can be a bad thing? I understand that it's become a factor in the show ring, what's the reason for it?

    AI'ing Heifers

Every scientific document I can find indicates that conception rates are higher for heifers.  I can't stand messing with them. What does it mean when there is absolutely no definition to the cervix despite cycling at the same time as other cows with rock hard definition? I don't AI our own...

One final Nebraska Big XII post. We'll miss you guys.

Let’s be clear on one thing…I wouldn’t start this thread if it weren’t for the gloating by a certain Nebraska fan about the north “beating up” the south (on a day the two actually went 3-3 vs each other) and the flood of whining two weeks ago.  This will be my last post about Nebraska and I’ve...

    Freeze branding in rain?

Our working chute is covered but they'll go back into the rain.  Does freeze branding work in that situation?

    Semen Tank Paint Scratch Repair

Should minor scratches on a semen tank be retouched and if so with what? I'm not talking about deep gashes that ruin the tank but rather minor scratches in the paint that just expose a little bit of metal.

    Denver Maine Sale & PHA

As you know the Denver Maine sale no longer allows PHA carriers in it.  While looking at the bulls, there is absolutely no reason to think there are carriers in the group. There was one bull in the sale that my neighbors from back home all liked as the best of the group, lot #184.  While not a...

    Video Format "Peer Review"

After reading Brad's recent thread I decided to throw a video up to be picked apart.  I've always been of the opinion that critiques of actual stuff is the best way to learn. I tried to take most of the advice in the thread... -There's a shot of his feet -A shot from pretty much every angle -A...

    Show Heifer Agreement

I've agreed in principle with a local junior to show a heifer in exchange for her first calf.  The deal seems good to both of us )she gets to show a heifer and have her first calf, I get the heifer shown and fed properly while only giving up the "calving ease" calf) but we'd like to put...

    Angus Sale Catalogs

Am I the only one that just laughs these things now?  Entire sale catalogs are now nothing more than listings of insane prices for cattle with some type of association with the lot in question. "She is a direct daughter of the $200,000 Southern donor GAR Precision 1709 who is in turn a direct...

    Hay Shortage and Surplus

With the extreme demand for hay out East, why haven't cattlemen out there been buying hay from Texas and surrounding states where we can barely give it away this year?  I personally know of about 1,000 Tifton-85 round bales that aren't getting a sniff at $40 when last year they were turning down...
