FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

Mark, I promise you no sandbagging here. Yes my daughter has been showing for 4 years but until the past 18 months, we have been on our own and just doing ok at shows. Our main success until this past OYE (market steer), has been at our county fairs shows. My daughter loves to show but due to...

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

Well we made it back from the American Royal and wanted to give my last update regarding how the heifer acted in the ring. The heifer acted great in the ring, heifer never tried to walk fast and escape the ring, she pretty much walked into her stance every time my daughter stopped her. It was a...

I'm Looking for American Royal Advice - Going for the first time

I am assuming many on this site have gone to the American Royale Livestock show. My daughter and I will be heading up there for the Junior and Open Charolais heifer show. Since this is the first time we have ever gone to this show, I would like some helpful advice to ensure we are prepared for...

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

Thank you for the responses. My daughter and the heifer are still learning to work together. I think The Charolais heifer is pretty cool and I love that she doesn't have any firewater bloodline. We have a lot of options to breed her to after she calves in April, if we don't sell her.

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

Well my daughter worked extremely hard over the past 30 days preparing for the Tulsa State Fair, trying to get her heifer to show better. We used some of the advice given above and the heifer showed a lot better, stood still in the ring. The one thing that the heifer needs to improve on before...

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

I totally forgot about the product called focus. We used it a couple years back and had okay results, one calf seemed to relax while on it and one calf didn't seem to be affected by it.  I got some grow and shine/liquid melatonin recently, and plan to start giving it to her the week prior to the...

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

All good points VC. We do use a rope halter at home and a show halter with the chain wrapped. My daughter has been able to find that spot on her retired heifers loved being scratched but not on this one. Either she doesn't scratch one spot long enough or she hasn't found that spot yet. I will...

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

My daughter is 13 and has always been able to get her heifers to show great in the ring. Currently she is showing a purebred Charolais heifer (showed her since last spring). This heifer has never acted well in the ring, no matter the size of the ring. All she wants to do is get out of the ring...

(UPDATED with PICS) Shorthorn Bull Candidate or Show Steer??

Thanks for the information XBAR and librarian. I have been told by the gentleman that has seen them, that if we don't want to show them, we can put them in his on-line sale. My kids are really wanting to show some calves we raised, so they are making the decision tough. My plan right now is to...

(UPDATED with PICS) Shorthorn Bull Candidate or Show Steer??

Wow. You surprised me with those birth weight numbers, especially since the owner of the bull uses him on his heifers. That definitely isn't they type of weights I want to see in his bloodlines. Now I understand why our ex shorthorn plus show heifer was bred to the same bull and had a bull calf...

(UPDATED with PICS) Shorthorn Bull Candidate or Show Steer??

When I load him and his momma up this week and haul to my lot behind my house, I plan to get some testing done on him to see if he is clean. I meant to include that in my original post but thought it was too long already.

(UPDATED with PICS) Shorthorn Bull Candidate or Show Steer??

My son's pureblood shorthorn ex-show heifer had her first calf the first week of May (pureblood bull calf). She is approximately 52 inches tall, is a great milk producer and is out of Starburst. The calf was sired by a Shorthorn bull named Fieser's Weston (reg# x4189303). This bull is considered...

Opinions on low profile trailers for show cattle

I am looking for opinions from those that haul show cattle in low profile trailers. If you could do it all over again, would you buy a low profile or purchase one that is standard height?

How do you build your bedding at livestock shows? Up for trying something new.

I have seen a couple people use the roller posted above before and it definitely seemed to pack the bedding well.

Anyone experience this type of problem with show calf? 10 days away from OYE

Interesting information Tallcool1. Your advice regarding LA200 and gauze sounds simple enough. I will have to try that. Renegadelivestock your post regarding Pinesol caught my attention.  What or how does Pinesol help?

How do you build your bedding at livestock shows? Up for trying something new.

I was reading some info on this site while doing some searching and noticed that most said to do what you mentioned and put the pellets down last. Thanks for the reply.

How do you build your bedding at livestock shows? Up for trying something new.

Due to having a heifer recovering from either a stone bruise, abscess, unknown problem, and having to be at OYE for three days before showing, I would love to read how others prepare their bedding for their calves at shows. I used the pellets last year and wet them down then put shavings over...
