If I know when the heat started, I like to wait until they start to go out of heat.  Otherwise, just use the "breed in the evening what you see standing in the morning and bred in the morning what you see standing in the aftertoon" apporach.  I have bred cows after standing only 4 hours and had them settle.  I think you have a fairly wide window.

I think it varies greatly from animal to animal.  I usually try and wait about 4 hours after standing stops, but some cows I have found to breed immediately after standing, others I have found it is best to wait 8-10 hours.
I am almost convinced timing isn't nearly as important (semen actually lives 12 hours inside the cow) as placement of semen. Ovulated eggs seem to last about 4-6 hours if I recall.

Some well known breeders breed once a day .every thing in the day before ...My experience is I think an people that have some knowledge I thought about this said better to bred late than too early....

If your nutrition  is off balance it might not matter when you breed..... most people proably know this but don't use florescent light where your managing the semen ....

12 to 18 hours after standing heat onset.

Hate the heifers that stand for 24 hours.....

What about the "florescent light"????
