Hi all! This will be my second steer I've ever shown steers and I'm in Highschcool. This past year my Black Angus "feedlot destined" ranch steer placed seventh overall at the local County fair with over 55 market steers entered( Charlais, Maine-Angou crosses, ranch calves, club calves, you name it.(lol) ) He was finished correctly and in good condition however the judge said he gave up some muscle through his hip unlike the steers placed above him. I would like to jack pot this year and a steer like him would never work with what they want! Does anyone know of any good club calf breeders in Montana? If not I have another place lined up that has black Angus calves that do well in the show ring and will be about 6 months old when I first see them. How can you tell if a calf is going to have a full, strong hip at that age and have jack pot potential?

Sorry it's so long but thanks!!

It'd be tough to find a purebred Angus steer that could compete against a good crossbred calf. If your show is like 99% of the shows out there & your goal is to win it, you need to focus your search on a pretty decent crossbred. Not saying there isn't a purebred out there that couldn't win, but he'd be harder to find.
