We have had 10 calves out of seventy.  We will leave them for about 3 hours so they can suck on their own, but none of them will.  The tempature is around -5 or so, so its not like it is really cold out.  Does anyone know why they wont suck on there own. Its just like they dont know what to do? Any help would be appreciated.

Can't help you with the why, blue. We had that problem with 6 cows my dad bought from a herd dispersal 30 years ago. His remedy was " an egg mixed with a shot of Crown Royal". Don't know what it did, but it worked every time...........He joked at the time, that if it didn't work the use for the rest of the bottle was self explanatory.

genetics can play a role, i have seen certain family lines that calves have no vigor at birth and need tons of guidance and help and some that are so vigorous that they pull themselves up by latching on to a teat, different breeds too
