OK...I might be venting here...but....Just got back from local county show (got reserve...and am happy with it).  The top 2 steers were a very easy choice out of the rest of the steers.  The judge struggled putting them into 1st or 2nd.  His reasons were the reserve steer (our steer) was the most massive of the 2, had more muscle mass, deeped sided, plenty of rib shape, he just would like to improve structure a tad bit, liked his look(said he looked fresh)...now on the Grand he liked him, but said that he was not the most massive, deep sided calf.  He final decision came down to this "I selected this calf for grand champion because it has more muscle expression over the reserve."  Exact words...so my confusion come in now....our calf had the most muscle MASS, but not the most EXPRESSION ok....but wouldn't you get more red meat from mass than expression?

You need to read the thread a few months ago on the funny things judges say, that will make you feel better.  At our last show, our bull got 3rd in class. The judge compared the 1st two bulls and criticized each of them for their faults and then came to our bull. He said he could also win the class for x number of reasons, never gave a criticism of him, only said his positives. When we walked out several people told us the judge said more good things about our bull than any,  but put him 3rd! Just how it goes. Sounds like you had a good show anyway and good luck expressing that muscle mass!!!lol

Showed a heifer calf a few months back, the judge placed her 4th.  Before he was done commenting on her, he had gotten to a point of no return and said she'd have won the class if she had been a little bigger, it was funny to listen to as he just gushed talking about her.  Made it even more humorous when the heifer that won the class was made champ,  as there was a smaller framed heifer that he obviously liked better.  Sometimes it is amusing to hear comments on animals that are a little further down the line, judges obviously like these cattle alot,  but apparently they aren't judging these cattle according to their own standards...likely why I never would've made a judge.

Went to a show here about week ago. Below are some words the judged used

THis heifer is more "relevant"
This steer is looking "rail-ee"
More better calf
The reserve looked NAILE quality and he said he didn't use him because of his "rock star" qualities. He would have to go to the second calf for grand and put him in reserve.

I had to laugh. There were more and the grammar got worse.

I tihnk judges sometimes run out of things to say.

I think that I could place the cattle the way I would want to, but placing them and being able to talk the class is a gift. Some can make the reasons flow like water and some make it flow like mud!!
