I debated on posting this but I decided to in hopes this post gives those families/kids who have struggled in the ring some hope/motivation.

My family started showing calves back in the late 80's.  My brother, sister and I never anything on the district or state level despite all our hard work.  We won our county show a couple times and my sister made the sale at the Tulsa fair a couple times but that was the extent of our success.  Once we all graduated, my family got out of the show cattle business until three years ago.  Despite all of our work the past few years, we were only being competitive at our county show.  My sons first two steers were very high quality but didn't make the sale at OYE.  His heifers would do okay in their class but nothing else.  Despite the outcomes, we believed in what we were doing and kept working hard and believing that we can accomplish great things.  Well all I can say is Fall 2012 has been awesome!  My daughter's heifer has won Supreme Heifer at our County Fair, Breed Champion and the OKC State Fair and Res Breed Champ at Tulsa.  My son won Breed Champ Commercial at our County, Breed Champ at OKC State Fair, and Reserve Breed Division II Champion Commercial Heifer at Tulsa.  Words can not express how proud I am of my kids for not giving up and how much I appreciate those that have guided us along the way.

If you have been doing all you can on your project.  Congrats, good luck and keep up the good work.  If you know of someone or a family that works extremely hard on their project, give them a pat on the back and tell them to keep it up because great things are possible.  You just have to keep believing and working hard.

Here are some pictures, starting with our first steer (Manny) three years ago.

Congratulations on your success.  Just like you said, hard work and perseverance are the key.

"My sons first two steers were very high quality but didn't make the sale at OYE"

I had to comment on this.  It's too bad we can't support more steers in the sale at OYE, because it's just incredibly tough to make that premium sale. Alot of really good steers are left standing every year.  I know how frustrating it is (believe me, I know), and it's a shame it has to be that way, but don't feel like your project wasn't successful because you didn't make the sale at OYE.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't know if I could but wanted to try to give some encouragement to anyone that has been experiencing a tough time in the ring. I know it has helped me and my family when someone gave us some kind words.

I agree with you DLD, OYE is extremely tough and more steers should be accepted.
