Just wondering-how do all of you feed your bred females (cows and heifers).  I've heard of people who only put out hay, some who just leave them on the grass pastures, and some who supplement grain....what has worked for you?  Any information is appreciated.

Grass in the summer, grass hay in the winter, and any thing else they want to forage for under the snow.  Alfalfa (if I have any) after calving.  We typically have to feed hay 6-7 months a year.

The heifers we show as calves get a few pounds of soyhulls and beet pulp, but once they are yearlings, they are part of the cowherd, and it is eat what you can find.

We tend to let them eat grass in the spring-fall and hay in the winter. If they are calving in spring, we pull them off of rich grass so the unborn calf doesn't grow too big in the last month.
