We have a 1/2 blood simmi steer crossed with a Heatwave. He currently weighs 1187. Our county fair is the third week in July. I believe July 24 show date, but we are shooting for State Fair last week in August. Are we at a good weight or should we be backing off. Keep in mind we do some jackpot show during the summer and he could use some full behind the shoulders.

What is his ADG for the last month?
What do you think he will finish at? His frame size
Is he still growing or has he slowed down?
Depending on his ADG and build he may be right on track for the July fair but you probably would need to hold him at some point for the State Fair. Not knowing where you are, how much the summer heat might come into play, if you plan on putting them in a cooler, these conditions can slow them down as well. I think you would have to make a choice, feed him for the early show or hold him for the State Fair, It could be tough to have him at his best for both, it can be done but it is allot of constant monitoring and changing the little things to hit 12:00, twice, 5 weeks apart. Your calf is about where the boy I have been helping, your calf should cruise into the July show no problem.

The kid I have been mentoring this year has a steer sitting right at 1200 pounds he has gained 3.3 pounds in the last 70. His Market Heifer is 957 and gaining 2.7 both animals should be in their respective competitive ranges by his fair, July 1. I figure the steer will be in the high 1300s and weigh in the low 1300s and the heifer will be in the low 1100s, not bad for an April heifer, he would have like to gotten her to 1200, but that will not happen.

Good luck

Thanks for the info VC.  We also have a market heifer that is weighing 1083 today.  She is a Monopoly x Friction so her hip height is not real high but she is a tank.  We dont think she can weigh over 1200 but we think she is about done with the big weight gain.  I certainly think we do not want to get over 1250 or she will be to big and sloppy.  1200 would be ideal.  The steer at this point, I believe will start slowing down but I think he still needs growth in a couple areas.  We would like him to fill in a bit behind the shoulders and maybe widen out a bit on top.  He was quite roly poly about a month ago and it seemed you could see rolls on his rolls on his top line but the last couple weeks it seems like he is evening out a bit and seems to be a little more level across his top.  He is definately deep enough.  I would say if there one area I could grant him credit would be his depth of body.  I think we are perfect with weights now just want to keep him fresh for state fair as well as the market heifer.  We have been told that we have a good chance to finish on top with both these animals but ultimately I just want the kids to have fun, meet new people, and learn something, but as long as we have been showing it would be nice to pull off a win!!!
