Have the idea of coloring wood shavings for a show. But really dont know where to get dye from or a good process to go about it. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Get a hold of Becker Underwood,  Ames, Ia.  They make a product called Mulch Magic.  See if they won't send you a sample. Mix with water in a Hudson sprayer and spray your shavings. Their color products started as a discussion over a beer in Atlantic, IA on how to visually see where chemicals were sprayed in a farm field.  Now their color is used for football fields such as the Superbowl and for coloring entire golf courses such as the Masters.  Jeff and Roger are good people too.

Back in 1997, we were still living close to Palmyra Missouri, and th final showfor out tenure there was at hand. We were trying to win the best CLUB display that year -- and several others ad the same general set up -- wood shavings galore were every where and it was a tuff competition.

I had just got done spraying a field the day before for a fella for Musk Thistle, and had used the blue dye that cam ewith the chemicals. It was and IS a powerfully effective dye -- try getting it off your hands some time!

I went home and got te hand sprayer and mixed up a really potent batach bu used only water and dye. Told the kids to get thier forks all ready, and simply sprayed the bedding area, aited a few minutes for it to soak, and turned them all over -- and sprayed again! Did this until they were all covered, sure hope you ike BLUE OR GREEN though, that was I could remember geting hold of!

Word of caution -- the spray is not too smart -- it will collor ANYTHING it hits, so use some sort of background cover to be safe, or simply mix a batch in an old tank and dump the shavings in for a spell, pitch them out and let dry -- works really good! Not very expensive either!

Insidently -- we won the Club Display award for our efforts -- it paid a whopping 20 bucks and a small trophy -- but the memories are priceless! hehehe

Best of luck --

Terry

I have heard of people using a TMR mixer to mix the dye in.  Not sure what they used for color but it sure would be fast.  Just make sure the residue is safe.
