January calves

Is it good to have January calves and hold them back if your fair is in July? Opinions please.......... ???

For heifers it doesn't seem to be a problem. For steers it might be a little bit of a stretch, but probably could be done.

we calve most of our cows in that January to March range, so i have shown steers and heifers with lots of success at the regional 4-H show that is held the second week in July. Watch what time of the year you decide to push the calf, or to let them coast.

Okay sounds good I was thinking about of doing that because my calves r just not getting big enough there only getting to 1200 pounds or not even that heavy

It is much easier to hold one then to push one, most of the calves at our county fair, which falls the first week of July, need to be born early in the year. It can be real tough to get a late March early April calf to reach its potential, Like stated above it is a matter of managing them so the hit 12 o'clock at the right time. 18 months is not really that old, besides some genetics need the extra time anyway.

Yes, true they dp need more time and on your options i will b calving in january. will cornstalks inn a open fronted shed be warm enough?
