I recently bought a percentage maine heifer and I don't know a lot about maines as I raise simmys . She is sired by ALI and her dam is by Meyer 734 and half simmy , a quarter maine and a quarter angus. This heifer is smooth polled , black , with a beautiful blaze face with just a touch of white by her udder. I'm wondering what kind of cow she is going to make ? Do the ALI's work or not ? Im not really looking to raise something specific out of her yet just kind of an expiriment for me . Thanks

The Ali's have been producing some good steers out of THC bulls.  She should milk well.

To the Maine Anjou breed I believe he has brought decent calving ease, shorter gestation length, and I had a heifer sired by him out of a cow with a poor udder and he seems to have helped that a bit. I think he moderates frame a bit too. Hope this helps.

she will milk really really good and you can breed her to anything i would go with and angus or simmi calving ease for her first one cuz most of the maines are sired by ali good luck

great pedigree i would love to see a picture of that mating! In saying that being an ali there shouldnt be any structure problems, great milking ability. In saying that the reason the alis work with THC bulls is because most need some more thickness and substance of bone in my experience but have always made great cows for us with super good breeding parts.

I have an Ali X tank X hoodoo cow, who's extremely sound big boned very complete female who milked fairly well. Her calf came out small and had lots of vigor and it's now our top show prospect.

DCC - thanks for the good word. She won't be delivered till october but ill gladly put up a picture. I guess I really liked that she is clean as ALI is not a carrier, and her looks didn't hurt either !

Ali (Cowan's ALi 4M formerly known as Cowan Maximus) has an intereting pedigree - he was sired by NBH Polled Energizer, a Canadian bull, who for a while you could only get the genetics by buying bred females from Canada. Energizer was a very popular bull (for a Maine bull) who sired some really nice females - I liked my Energizer females. He traced back to some of the older breed changers including Black Gold one of the first Maine black bulls and Poplar Haven Smithbilt a leader in maternal traits and btw the sire of DF Magic my all time Maine female maker.

On the bottom side you have a cow sired b Legacy who was a powerful big footed easy moving Maine bull - his sire was Polled Pursuit - never my favorite although he was received multiple accolades in terms of showing and progeny showing.  Ali's maternal grand dam was from the Wise's program in Canada sired by DF Midas  - Midas is again a maternal leader in the breed - I love my Midas females and Wise's had a whole bunch of really great Midas females in their program

IMHO this heifer has the potential to create some really nice females - I sure wouldn't breed her to a carrier of any lethal genetic defect

I have an Ali * Theobold-Angus  First calf heifer (as a 3 year old, bull was 3 for 12 in her group she was one of the ones missed), she had her first calf out of a  DR. Who son, 2 days early@ 82 pounds. She milled around in labor for about an hour but when she started to calf she laid down pushed him out and was up fretting over him instantly (he is my avatar) I will say she was a tiny thing and not much to her when she was born, but @ 12 months she had come around quite well. She is bred to My Turn this year.

DL- I appreciate the detailed information on everything. In the back of my mind I had thoughts of her being a female maker but didn't want to say anything until I had some more insight from you Maine people. Thanks again !
