Just wanted to share that a 4-H member that is new to beef projects is having a pretty good day.  Sam came to us for a calf last fall and I tried to set him up with a calf that would do a good job for him.
Today he has reported to me that he entered his calf in the Carcass Division at his fair-- they do all that same things the regular show calves do, but they also have the live ultrasound class and then he will go on to the rail to be judged again.
He got his ultrasound sheet and walked in the ring and was placed live 3rd out of 13 calves!  They are tickled pink!  I am tickled too-- this is great data for my breeding program.  He said he is ready to come pick out the calf for next year!

Sam's calf is sired by Lead Outside the Box  #4162691- herd bull we are developing and a Muridale Buster 14K cow!

Live Data:  Ribeye:  14.1  Fat Cover:  .56  KPH:  2.50  IM Fat:  4.35  Grade:  Low Choice  Yield:  2.6  with projected retail prod.-- 64.52% and estimated carcass value/Day on feed  $3.265

This is exactly the direction that I want my program to go-- Good, sound, balanced and productive fat calves.  So either we got lucky or some of the hard work in breeding and culling and placing replacements and choosing sires, etc is working!

And Sam had a great time!  He got the calf and has done all the work with the help of his friends that have a cattle feedlot and are also in the same 4-H club.  So they have been a great help to him to teach him how to feed his calf and take care of a calf.  Good old fashioned midwestern fun!

Awesome!  I liked your bull when you had him at the fair as a calf and it looks like he's doing a good job for you.  Best of all, you've helped a young person get started on the right foot.  They'll remember this all their life.
