The Holmere Alastair bull would be a useful type if crossed back on to cows of Scottish type i.e. Scottish Beef Shorthorn/ Maine Anjou breeding. What would hold him back is his colouring and calving difficulty figures. If you were to go down that type of bloodline route you'd be 100 times better off using something like Cairnsmore Thrasher. He would breed you more functional cattle and he is a lot easier calving than his figures would suggest. Personally I think these Scottish types are very hard fed. I bought a Scottish cow years ago as an experiment and she cost exactly 50% more to feed that the same size Irish and Canadian bloodline cattle. When we weighed the calves her progeny looked good but were on average always about 48kg  behind their herd mates at the same age. Her calves funnily enough always sold well but she really taught me that my opinions about that type were correct. The Stonmour Thundercloud bull is just crap to be honest. He was marketed here in Ireland for a few years. His calves were very squat, and their worst fault was the fact that the majority tapered very badly from the hooks to the pins. It was noticeable in his progeny from a young age and became worse as they matured. Lots of breeders sampled him here because he was cheap and cheerful, but they soon realised why he was so reasonably priced when his calves arrived. I judged at a Shorthorn field evening last year and you could spot his calves a mile off. Truly awful.
