I am new to this site but am very excited about some of the information and topics that you all have shared. My brother and I have a small Shorthorn herd in North Central Oklahoma. The genetics of the inital 3 bred cows that we purchased from Venable Shorthons go back to Ka'Ba Keystone and Ka'Ba Cowboy. I have one Ka'Ba Cowboy daughter left, she is 13 and just had a really good little heifer, our plan is to try and flush her and get as many viable eggs as possible before she dies. I have never tried Double Stuff with any of my cows for fear of him being a TH carrier, would it be worth the risk to go ahead and try him? Also, I am really impressed with both Phildon bulls JBS Fringe and Get Serious, and am considering using them when we AI in a couple weeks. Has anyone had success with either of those bulls (i know Fringe is young and may not have many offspring) or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I hope your success is better than mine with the venable cows.  I was hooked in on them when he sold his cows.  Bought 13 and should have just bought 1.  I have never used double stuff on them.  The one cow that I used alot and did have some success with was a Keystone daughter.  I have flushed her several different ways and have had success with double vision and heatwave.  The daughters from this mating have been successful and are good females.  Above average milk, and can have a decent calf.  She produced the class winning heavy weight at OKC in 2006 of stovers.  I have some Heatwaves on the ground out of her this time and they all look good.  Just not quite what I would like for color pattern.  I wish i still had that cow I would definitely use double stuff on her.  Just was not using my head.  Those cattle are good and even though he is a carrier for both just test your cow and then use accordingly.  Shorthorn steers used to bring the power to the majors that has been sometime ago though and I believe a direct result of TH and PHA.  I would never use two known carriers together, but I am a firm believer if you want that one with the killer look and muscle you better dabble in it a little.  I have eight cows left plus three really nice heifers on the ground one being the full sister to jazzman.  If someone is interested I would think about letting go of some decent shorthorn cows and some heifers at a reasonable price.  I just do not have the time to mess with them and get them mated correctly.  I believe they would work on the right bulls.  I would use double stuff if the cow is clean in a heartbeat.

There is a pretty good bull that lives south of you named Jake's Proud Jazz that could work for you.

I might go that route if I were you.  He will give you most of the same show look that you are looking for in a lower BW and easy keeping kind of package.

I think he's collected at Stillwater, you could probably see him there or in Elgin. I would think he would be covering some cattle soon.

I'd be careful on that , some of those Cowboy dtrs were on the smaller side. I'd hate to see you end up with a bunch of small puds. If she's got some size, then go for it. Good Luck!!

He works best on upper-moderate to large framed cows and will produce some awesome steers - steer in my avatar is a JPJ. Heifers, like Doc said, can be on the clubby side.

This is strictly my opinion. If you are going to go to the trouble of flushing a female that you want future replacement daughters out of, I would find a couple straws of Sonny or another maternal shorthorn bull. I know Sonny is expensive, but if you had couple straws it could make it worth the flush. May want to check out TM GUS. I also would look at Wolf Willow Leroy his offspring that I have seen are looking better and better. These would give you options on females. Gizmo wouldn't be a bad idea but he is not going to give you much frame. Do some research before you flush the old gal to make it worth your while.

Just to clearthe air a little.  When I bought those cows they were exactly what I wanted.  The 13 were fine I just never could match them correctly with the right bull.  My donor cow I would not trade at all with the experience I had.  I just wish I would have used double stuff to no end on her and never took that chance.  Not to brag, but the eight cows that I have left, all daughters from these cows except for one, phenotypically would be hard to replace.  Basically all the right sizes average to better udder and milk quality and all except the one are direct decendants of the venable cow herd.  No doubt the succes in that program, I just did not get it done here for lack of time spent with the cow herd.  As most know it is hard having a second job and being able to correctly AI cattle for the right times.  No I did not get screwed on the cows, nor do I really want to get rid of them I am just doing the quality of genetics a dishonest job for lack of time than I can spend.  With that said I would be willing to part with them at a fair market value.  Lots of money tied up in embryo tranfer to get the cows that I have.

The fringe bull is unproven but I have seen this bull many times in his young life before and after he went for collection he is big footed big boned loaded with muscle lots of hair very thick across the top with a very good square hip and  he moves like a cat. A buddy of mine was so impressed with him he flushed his cow to him last month without breeding to him first to see what kind of offspring he would get and he is usually not that bold. Our first calves our due to him in april. Now about Get serious I have not seen this bull but have seen numerous offspring from him and I haven't seen a bad one yet now not all of them are grand champion caliber either but overall well above average calves we have a heifer from him out of an average cow and she is loaded with muscle and bone. Phildon also has another bull called absoluty his picture is horrible but I have seen this bull also and he has alot of muscle and bone I have also seen numerous calves from him out of shorthorns and black cows very very nice. I saw a red steer out of a cross cowthat should go along way at major shows.I will probably be kicking myself later for not buying it.I hope this helps you.
