We worked calves this weekend. Love being in the barn with the kids, been awhile! We show from May to September over here, so we wind down over the winter. Kids decided to put halters on fall born calves and work the steers we are raising for the carcass contest this year.
The first pic is an October born Montecito calf, and we are pretty impressed so far. 90 days, and she looks better every day I look at her! My son will be showing her this year and next at the shows, and this year will be his first year to show at regional and national shows (he is 9). I think he will have fun!
The second pic is her from behind (on the right) and our half blood Beef Maker x Pioneer angus heifer on the left. Remember the post about the 45 pound heifer we had in September? That is her! She looks really good, and has caught up with the group. She is bred and owned for my oldest. The rest of the fall calf pictures did not turn out, too much sun coming into the barn door (and I am NOT complaining after all this cold!).
The third pic is our steer, out of our Mo Better bull we showed in 2012, won the MO State Fair junior percentage show with him. He is a June, was steered in October, weaned in November and fed with the other steer we are raising, and weighed in at 880 pounds! For a 7 month old, that is pretty darn good! Our kill date is the end of June, and he will make 1400 with no problems as a yearling! We have been weighing every few weeks, and he is gaining 3.5 pounds a day right now!
The 4th pic is our other steer, who is a December (so yearling), and weighed 964 pounds. He will grade well I think, and is out of a bull we raised a few years ago also. He is now up to 3 pounds a day gain, so not as stellar!
The last shot is the rear of the steers.
I thought I would share. I sure like our Montecito heifer!!! One of my favorites! Our embryo calving is about done, with one left in mid Feb. So far, we have a cute Steel Force heifer, flush mate and maternal sister to two of the bulls that won the Denver Pen of 3 Bull show from Gateway. We also have a really nice Broker bull calf, face marking similar to Broker himself. I will try to get recent pics to put up. Our third embryo is a Dream On, time will tell with her. But we are happy!!! Great season for us so far.

The first pic is the Steel Force heifer embryo, born about a week ago, flush mate to the Steel Force bull in the winning Pen of 3 Denver bulls and half sib to one of the other ones. The second pic is the Broker bull embryo, dam is TC Sweet Dreams, owned by Tommy Kline.
