I thought that there were some very good buys in the heifer calves in the sale. Sale grossed $1.3 M but there were still some excellent buying to be done. There were several times when a cow with her heifer calf would come into the ring with the buyer being able to take choice. There were some cows that sold for $10,000-$20,000 with a v good heifer calf at foot. The heifer calf would then sell for $1500 - $2500. I remember one cow selling for $23,000 and her heifer calf sold for $2000. The heifer calf looked like she would develop into a cow every bit as good as the mother ... or better. There were also some buys in the embryos. One cow sold for $30,000 and they then sold a set of embryos from her for $500 each. There were lots of embryos from some of the top cows at $`150 - 300 each. I am not sure why, but the Soo Line boys have told me before that embryos have been a tough sell for them unless it has been to overseas buyers. I think they have sold quite a few internationally but over here, they are tougher to sell. I would think that if a person had the opportunity to get some offspring from a cow like the Rhonda cow that brought $30,000 in the sale, that investing $1500 in 3 embryos would be a pretty good deal. She was an amazing beasty!
I was only at the sale for 1.5 hours, but it seemed to be getting better when I left. Wildcat Creek from Kansas had spent over $400,000 when I left. They purchased the top bull at $70,000 then paid another $25,000 for the 250 straws of semen on him. They also purchased lots of cows at $7500 + including the $30,000 cow Red Sooline Rhonda 5109 ( lot 179). The people that were there seemed to be there to buy.
