I have a nice 2 month halfblood black simmental calf that just came up with swollen back hocks. Vet said he may have picked up an infection through the naval or respiratory system and gave us a dose of Dectrine or something. It hasn't helped yet and don't think it will. It's a nice calf and was doing really well and didn't have swollen joints or hocks until the other day. He was however kind of different from the other calves, I would notice he would swing one hind leg under him to get up, and sometimes he would get up sitting like a dog. But he kept growing and nursing and keeping up with the cows and would lay around as they picked, but he would always get up and move with them looking perfectly fine and structurely nice until the other day when his hocks swelled up or grew. I suppose it's a birth defect or something he was born with since the medicine the vet gave isn't helping. Was wondering if anybody else has had a problem like this? If it is a birth defect how often would it happen. It's the dam's second calf, the first was allright and both were bull calves sired from the same bull.
