Hi all,
For a while I have considered raising some clubby calves. I want to be serious about showing, and I've got the equipment and a little experience to go for it. BUT, the #1 problem is no clubby cows. Reading threw some old books, I have found that many producers kept a separate herd of "show" cattle. I'm not sure I want to mess with the Chi's and Maine's, but I was thinking about some Shorties. Maybe even some with like an 1/8 or 1/4 Chi or Maine in their blood. I am still sure I want my "main" herd to be the maternal, rugged, and no-show genetics I have now, but considered running some clubbies with them. What do y'all think about that??
Thanks for input,
Cade

you can still ad some clubbie genetics to your herd without scarficing maternal qualities. I'd decide what breed I'd want to go w/ that compliments your herd now. I'm judging from avatar you have Herefords? Just keep in mind defect status & BW's.

Thanks red. Actually, that bull will be used this spring to breed some baldies. I have all black stuff except for that one blue cow that has some shortie somewhere way back. Well, on that note, do you have any bulls that would compliment high volumed, short, thick, Angus cows?

I have had good luck w/ Iceman, Foreplay, Hard Core & Gold Club on those types of cows. Gold Club however is a PHAC so I'd discourage you from him. I think Gigolo Joe might also work well. I have a cow that is just about what you described bred to him so will see at the end of February how he does w/ her.

Red, I appreciate it. If you could, could you post how that calf when he (or she) is born?
Thanks again.

I sure will. Have a Hard Core that I want to get a picture of but not "allowed" to go out to barn yet.  ::)

Nothing wrong with having a few Shorthorns or Shorthorn Plus on the side.

Cade, I've got some embryos in the tank that would be pretty good genetics for you to get started, and then you know what I told you I would have this coming up summer.  You might even be surprised at how well the calves from those genetics would do out there.

If you have Angus cows you have a lot of different ways you can go with them. The Hereford bull you are using this spring. You must be shotting for some black baldies. In Guyers sale there's a nice Hereford x Angus heifer in there I forget who she is bred too.

Well I'm geuss I'm biased because I own a share of him , but he's a heck of a bull. I'm staying after Wayne to get a mature pic of him because he's even more impressive now. At the TN Agribition there are some embryo's by him , 4 dtrs & 2 son's in the sale. I've done real well with his calves &  he has some great genetics behind him.

Well Doc, if YOU own part of him, I know he must be one heck of a Shorthorn!  ;D DO you have a ballpark on what his semen is going for?

I might! Actually, as we discussed, you know who is my biggest hurdle to raising clubbies.  :-\ But, if you could PM what some of those other embryos are, I might like to have one or two. Plus, I'd be VERY interested in what's coming this summer.

I would sample each breed a bit, and then decide what direction to go. In all likelihood if you are raising club calves you will have all 3 of the breeds you mentioned above.
